Hum after lift

    Hey Gang!

    I just had a 3” Ready lift installed and now have a strange hum from about 35 mph to 55???

    WTF???

    If you have 4WD, does it go away while in 4WD? If it does then it would most likely be the front diff bearing, most people replace with the ECGS bushing

    ^^^That.

    At the same time, you have to expect that after raising the truck 3" (most recommend 2"), things can be be affected, as you are experiencing.

    +1 for possible needle bearing. It's a known issue that affects a percentage of 4Runners. Lifting can trigger the issue.

    Like @hvac guy mentioned, get it on a straight section of road, at ~30 MPH, put it in 4HI and see if it stops. If it does, and returns when you shift back to 2wd, it's the needle bearing.

    3" is also starting to push it with CV angles.

    Did you get it aligned after the lift?

    I had the same 3/2 Readylift kit and didn’t experience any unusual noises as a result. Possibly as others have stated that the lift exasperated an existing problem with the needle bearing or maybe a pinion angle issue.

    On a side note, attached is a link to a thread I started last summer regarding issues I had with my Readylift spacer lift. I have since removed the lift kit.

    Yup, agree that it’s likely the needle bearing. Check to see if the noise goes away when you shifting to 4hi as mentioned above.

    Mine made the same noise intermittently ever since day 1 off the dealer lot, with stock suspension. Common issue. If the dealer replicates the problem under warrantee, their solution is to swap out the entire diff.

    Alternatively, the ECGS bushing is considered the only permanent solution. One thing to keep in mind though, don’t screw up the install on that. If you drive it in too deep, the diff has to be split to get the bushing out.

    Okay boys it goes away in 4hi.

    So forgive my ignorance and naivety, evidently I’ve more money than sense…

    Tell me more about the CV angle and solutions. Also is the needle bearing and ECGS bushing the same thing? Or do I need to do both?

    I’m on summer vacation with my 3 teenage daughters in route to Kansas City MO via Duck Creek UT, Jackson WY, Devils Tower WY, and The Badlands in SD. We just did Zion today with Bryce Canyon on for tomorrow. Is this something I should get fixed sooner than later? Can I run in 4Hi till KCMO?

    East Coast Gear Supply makes a bushing that replaces the needle bearing. They make a tool that can help. Check out YouTube for tutorials.

    The CV angles are probably too high - caused by the 3” lift. It will cause premature wear on the CVs and make for a harsh ride. Check out tinkeres adventure for great explanations of IFS and lifts
