Any brands better than others? Ones to avoid? For a 2022 ORP.

Got my RCI rack put together today and will be installing tomorrow. IMO they are all about the same quality from what I’ve seen. I went with the RCI as they have great sales, they have a Memorial Day sales event going on right with up to 20% off and the other reason is the mounting to the vehicle they use rubber/poly blocks instead of metal tube/posts. But that’s just my preference.

I have a suggestion for anybody looking to add an aftermarket roof rack: 1) determine what accessories you are looking to attach (RTT, recovery boards, fuel containers, boxes, etc), 2) see which rack manufacturer offers those specific attachments and at what cost. Make your determination. From what I see, most major manufacturers make pretty good racks which serve the 4Runner community well. It all comes down to what you are using the rack for and can that manufacturer satisfy. I have the Gobi, which I bought because of the mesh panels which offer endless attachment opportunities. It does sit higher than the aluminum low-profile racks, but that is not much of a consideration for me. YMMV.

Its also worthwhile to note what they actually use for cross bars. I have the Sherpa, and I may be mistaken but it sure looks like they use standard 80/20 extrusion for the cross bars. That would mean anything that can attach to 80/20 with drop in T-nuts and other bracketry will work. If another company uses the same extrusion, chances are their accessories will also work on my rack. My Rhino Rack HD cross bars on my last truck were the exact same dimension as unistrut and the like, so also very easy to find high quality fasteners and brackets

I try to shy away from companies that reinvent the wheel so they can sell you very specific accessories that only work with their gear. That's my only advice, really.

I will say that my Sherpa seems very solid, and so far I am very happy with it.

    Love my Bajarack. No complaints.

    Decent article comparing brands.

Some advice on trying to narrow your search. Is the "look" your goal or is it more intended for a specific purpose. If you love the look of Gobi or Sherpa etc. Might not need to dig deep into pros and cons of others if you love the look and don't have specific uses in mind that won't work with it.

Aluminum or steel and 1 piece welded together or pieces assembled bolted together. Trade offs here on weight savings and strength. 1 piece is more expensive to ship but I feel less rattle prone with no bolts other than attaching to mounts. Flat top or basket. Once you narrow down the criteria it's easier to focus on specific companies to compare similar products.

I am the oddball picking Bajarack and works perfectly for my needs loading up all my gear and hitting the road. Others hate the look being higher profile off the roof. Gobi customer support and lead times eliminated them from the options for me. Side by side not sure if I would have picked Gobi if this was not a problem. Lots of good options only you will know what is important or could be compromised.

Accessories are another good call out. I have a hi lift jack and recovery boards mounted to mesh floor. Mesh floor was a requirement for me with the gear I am throwing up there and so easy to mount brackets.
