Hi folks. First off, I'm a retiree living on a tropical island. Yeah, I know, but there are thorns in paradise, ya know, and no, I'm not a fatcat, just someone wanting to live in a comfy, beachy place I prefer, while I still can. About those thorns, one is that vehicle repairs can sometimes get dicey for lack of experienced mechanics (Yes, there are some, providing their shops haven't been hurricane nuked) and convenient, inexpensive parts (nearest OEM dealer is a gouge nazi on a different island 200 miles away) because many island vehicles are older. Our island 4Runner is a 2005 and I'm fond of it. We bought it used from the OEM dealer in 2014. It has a turbocharged, intercooled 1KZ-TE diesel engine. It's good in the sand in 4X4 mode with wide tires. That is when it IS in 4X4, because now it ISN'T, won't engage and I suspect that it's a problem with the Automatic Disconnect Differential (ADD). OEM dealer nazi wants $1,452.00 for a new ADD, providing it is the correct part (they took my VIN for reference) but won't tell me the part number to confirm on my vehicle (I don't really know where the unit is located for certain, although I presume that it is mounted around the front differential, and I don't know where to find the part number on the unit, for that matter). If it really is a problem with the ADD (Vapor Switching Valves???- does this ADD use vacuum or a motor for actuation???). If I can't get a suitable replacement aftermarket or at a less expensive stateside parts house, then I am considering a manual hub conversion, providing local talent can field the conversion. Anybody have any thoughts, comments, informed opinions, previous experiences, constructive criticism, etc? How much is a conversion stateside?

Not sure you get much info here, most of don't have a diesel engine. I also do not recognize ADD.....Hopefully someone here has the info you need.
