I got my 87 4runner about 10 days ago. I have been doing little things to it.
I noticed that the rubber dust boots on the transmission at the base of the shifter was failing and torn.

I bought two new ones made in Japan for about $12 each. I found that the new boots would not slip over the thick upper portion of the shifter as the boot hole is small. It looks like I risked ripping the boot.

Here is how you slip the boot over the thick shifter.

At your local hobby shops, get some 100% silicone oil that is used in RC car shocks. A small bottle is $4.

Coat the upper (thick) portion of the shifter with the silicone oil. The boot will easily slip right into place like nothing. The 100% silicone oil will not degrade the rubber.
