What do you carry in your 4R all the time and why?

I also carry tp, I go hiking almost every week/ year round in shawnee national forest, plus out of state Don't always have service/ signal, so AAA isn't always an option. If I ever get stranded in my car on the back roads in the woods, I'll be set, better than using leaves, nature calls anywhere, anytime. ⁰

 

I carry winch straps, tools and paper towels. Carry them just in case I get stuck or rescuing others.

I also installed onboard air compressor in the cargo area. Carry long enough air hose to deflate and inflate my tires for trails. Was a challenge to mount it where I wanted (in the small space above the wheel well).

Good list. We carry about the same in ours.

 

I don't carry a dog crate anymore after installing a hatch grate. I can keep the window open and keep the dog in.

I'll be happy to take photos, I was planning on it anyway for a blog I'm starting. But it'll be at least a few days to a week before I'm able to. I'm changing my cargo system as we speak. Up until now I've been using two Storm iM3300 rifle cases bolted to my Victory 4x4 roof rack to carry the majority of the gear, but I have since removed those. Instead of two rifle cases, I'm switching to one Pelican BX140R cargo case; it'll be better for multiple reasons: The shorter, but deeper and wider case will be easier to fit items in, especially bulky stuff in a pinch. It also has a QD bracket system, so I'm not drilling holes into the bottom of the case like with my other two. And finally, it doesn't scream, "gun". I know rifle cases make super convenient (and low profile...physically) storage for a roof rack, but everyone who sees them thinks they have a weapon. On a car stop a few months ago the officer asked if I had any guns in my "rifle case". I wouldn't have switched to a different case for that reason alone, but I have to admit I love the added benefit of not making everyone think I have guns up there.

 

Does not reduce visibility, still can see through the gate. Orangeboxx fabricator makes these. They also have an option to remove the middle if needed (it cost more for that option). Check their site.

 

What tools do you carry in your kit? Obviously a ratchet and some sockets, but what sizes, wrenches, etc? Trying to figure out what I’d need for a minimal kit for any reasonable roadside repair work?

 

A Phillips and regular screwdriver. Each in a small and larger tip (I keep one of those multi-head screwdrivers), Allen wrenches, a small metric socket set and SAE sockets in most sized (8-14mm and 1/4 to 9/16 SAE), plus any special sockets (i.e. a 19mm or a 22mm if I need one), fuses and fuse puller, needle-nosed and regular pliars, duct tape, zip ties. (I always have a pocketknife on me), a minimal air pump. It all fits in a small tool kit or a small tackle box. I also carry a Spetznaz entrenching shovel, a small Hudson Bay ax, and traction mats with a recovery strap. Enhanced First Aid kit and a plug-in Midland CB radio in a small tackle box. A pistol case for areas where I cannot conceal-carry. All fits in the back seat floor (there are only two of us and the dog). I don't travel off-road much but we do go down Hwy 97 and Hwy 395 to SoCal at least once annually and face some pretty bad weather on occasion.

 

What I carry:
Dogs (Pug, Chihuahua mix and Belgian Malinois mix) and Gunner crates (small and intermediate).

Other stuff (consolidated due to room taken up by crates and desire to conceal as much as possible):
water, first aid kit, flares, tie downs (ratcheting and cam), boots, beanie, gloves, socks, rain jacket, reflective vest, towel, wool blanket, paper towels, baby wipes, nitrile gloves, rope, qt of oil, flashlights, knives, probably some other random stuff.

 

Forgot something: I don't carry it all the time but I have a small Penguin camera case (about 9x9") that I carry my medical equipment with me (glucose meter, blood-ox meter, thermometer, tweezers, nail clippers, eyeglass repair kit, hearing aid batteries for meters and hearing aids). This goes with me anytime I'm out overnight!

 

What size is the large Gunner?

 

I carry a cold bag for when I get frozen stuff at the store.

 

The larger kennel is an intermediate. It is perfect for my 55lb Belgian Malinois. It does take up a lot of the cargo area, but it is crash tested and about as escape proof as you can get. I have an Impact aluminum crate at home.

 

Thanks for the info. I am trying to figure out kennel options for my GSD. He is about 80lbs so I do not think a kennel will work for us.

 

Staying more on topic; I bet you could probably fit virtually all my emergency essentials list in your Toyota at all times. I haven't yet but I want to fill up an ammo box or fishing box full, cuz you'll need it when you least expect it.

My wife uses a Lucky Duck large kennel for her GSD. He is 90 to 100 lbs. Only problem is we lose one back seat.

 

Great list. I’ve got about a quarter of that so far. I went overboard and bought a full metric socket and wrench set. (Tekton is a ridiculous value.) I need to figure how to store this stuff without showing a convenient to grab box with my kit in it. I don’t live in Cali, but I’ve had a window broken and tools stolen before. I’m contemplating a shallow drawer setup carpeted to look like a normal floor, or else a cargo cover. I miss the tool tray my Subaru had under the floor board. Could’ve fit a lot of this in there.

 

Just a thought: if I were only going to carry 4 sockets, I'd carry a 10,12,14, and 17mm as these are the most typical sizes Toyota uses.

I wrote "spline lug socket" above that cuz my lugs came with a specific socket, 17mm 6-point and 12-point slip under torque. Pretty sure I've used 13mm on skids and under the hood, could be mistaken. I should add 14mm!

 

I have some 13's on my sliders, but they're aftermarket.

I haven't done much under the hood on the '19, but all of my previous Toyotas used 10,12,14,17,19,21,24, and 27mm sockets.

I would love to think Toyota would have kept it simple. But, I know how manufacturers love making things a pain in the ass to service these days.

 

Oh yeah nice, I really want sliders, I have quite a bit of aftermarket as well. But it's my first Runner, first Toyota believe it or not. I will be copy and pasting your knowledge into my T4R google doc haha

 

I probably know surprisingly little for the amount of time I've spent under the hood of Toyotas.
