Average stock MPG and mods...

So first, let me be clear and state that I bought the 4R knowing full well that I would see a drop in gas mileage. My previous car was a 2010 Mazda 3 that got totaled by a driver who decided they needed a closer look. I had already been considering a different vehicle and had been interested in the 4R for a while. Things just happened to work out with timing and I picked up a 2018 ORP last summer.

I work from home, so my commute is getting past the dog in the hallway. So again, getting this while gas prices were up and knowing it wouldn't come close to the Mazda... I was fine with that.

I'm in the Northwest and have made trips to the beach and back where I was getting around 20 MPG. Of course around town that's going to drop. However, lately, it seems like I'm closer to 13-15 MPG. This seems unexpectedly low to me.

The vehicle is stock, including the tires, with 30K miles on it. In time I would like to add tires (stock size), rock sliders, front/rear bumpers, and perhaps a winch. That said, I'm not planning to be doing any rock crawling. Figure it's a combination between looks and usability. If I'm camping, fishing, etc and happen to hit some rougher terrain, so be it, I should be fine.

That said, just to pose a few questions:
1) What are most of you averaging for mpg?
2) Have you done any mods to try and improve this? (K&N/After-Market CAI? Exhaust?)
2a) Any success? How so?

Based on some other threads/comments here I have recently:
-- Installed an AEM DryFlow air filter (Lots of thumbs down on K&Ns)
-- Currently running a bottle of Archoil AR6400-G in the tank.

I too picked up a used 18 Limited nearly one year ago to the day. I was getting better mileage before changing the oem 20” ers to the 17” ORP wheels and AT tires. I’m getting the same as you now 13-15. I can get 17or 18 on the highway if I’m not stepping into it which rarely happens. Gotta make hay while the sun is shining. The 4 runner eats a lot of gas. It’s a good thing there are alot of gas stations.

 

Was the drop to 13-15 mpg sudden? Or gradual?

-Is the check engine light on?

-Do you drive fast a lot (80+ MPH)? Or, lots of city driving?



I seem to average around 16-17 overall. I switch between two sets of oversized tires, and have a roof rack on about 1/3 of the time.

No MPG mods. I haven't seen anything convincing to suggest that any mods can actually help.

 

Wife gets 12 MPG with 265/70/17 ATs, slimline bumper and winch, and a small lift. She never gets above 40/45 and has about 20 stop signs and lights on her 10 mile round trip commute to drop off and pick up our daughter.

I get 16-17 MPG with most of my driving at 70-75 with a roof rack and 285/70/17 ATs.

2022 SR5 RWD with 32k miles. Toyo OC AT3’s stock size SL load, RRW RR7 wheels, Dobinsons IMS lift, 3” front and 1.5” rear. No added weight. 18-19 mpg combined. 70% of the miles are at 80-85 mph on the interstate. My gas mileage has been acceptable, but the caveat is, I do not use the gas pedal aggressively, I get up to speed quickly but I don’t push it like it’s a sports car.

 

If you’re not planning on rock crawling then why add unnecessary weight with bumpers and sliders? That will just negatively impact mpg. Leave it stock with good tires. Aftermarket CAI’s are just snake oil. Stock intake is CAI.

 

Short trips & city driving = horrible MPG.

 

I was getting between 20-22 with mostly highway (70-85 mph) when it was stock a few years ago. Added aluminum low profile front bumper and winch and went to 19-21. Added gobi stealth and it dropped to 18-20 but I probably averaged closer to 75-85 (pandemic driving with no traffic).

Then I added sliders and started doing more around town driving. Lots of stoplights and short drives (4-5 miles one way) and was probably around 17-18.

End of last year I lifted 2.5/1.5, put on 285/70 tires (P load but still about 10 lbs heavier per tire), and added full aluminum skids (including cat guards and gas tank). I now average about 16 mpg but still mostly around town driving with some 70-80 mph highway.

I drive it like it like it's stock because it still handles so well with the lift, tires, and weight (thank you kdss and dobs ims). If I were to back off a bit I could probably get a bit better mpg but don't care since I work from home now and drive so little on a regular basis. No mpg mods.

For someone completely stock to go to 13-15 mpg sounds like something is going wrong even with winter gas, city driving, and treating it like a dragster between lights

 

Sliders can be good insurance against most door dings and shopping cart attacks. I had a good set on my wrangler that took the dings, as well as the person who hit them.

 

I got a brand new 2022 Off Road. Always got around 19, but I did spend around 30% of my time on gravel roads. I would have expected maybe 21 if I was just on 55mph state highways. I did not lose mileage with my 1.5" lift, nor my little chinesium roof rack. Now that I have some chonkier tires, I average 17. I am approaching 30k miles, have previously been doing standard 10k oil changes. I will start doing 7.5k oil changes with all the dust I am in. I tend to not usually rev past 3k

 

That’s my issue. Short trip and city driving. Don’t even get me started about the horde of zombie wheel holders heading to work in the morning all in the left lane doing 45 with the middle and right lanes open. I tend to get pissed and mash down to break from the horde.

 

Truth. Although I don't commute anymore, I miss the pandemic traffic when nobody was on the road and police either were afraid to pull people over (early covid) or didn't care because nobody was on the road. Even at the higher avg speeds I was getting pretty good mpg because it was constant - no slowing down and having to downshift to pass idiots

 

I only have 2700 miles but per the dash, I'm getting 18.2 overall. My work commute is about 6 miles of 60mph(but w lights), and 6mi at 70-75 and I get 20-21mpg on that. Rest of the time I'm tooling around a few miles at a time so 16mpg makes sense

 

Driving a 4Runner = Horrible MPG...but I digress. I drive a 4Runner, so I don't care. But I say it is better than my old '99 TJ I had - got 10MPG! LOL

 

My MPG is the in a ditch. My “slightly modified” LE gets between 12 to 13 average and 10ish off road.

Totally stock and 19.5 average MPG on a tank around town (zero highway) and sometimes 20+ if I'm very careful.

 

I used to regularly get 22 with mine when it was bone stock. About 50/50 highway & rural roads, not much stop and go. 50-65mph speed limits on the highway.

After stock size ATs, full skids, and sliders, I'm at 19.5 - 20.5 regularly.

 

2020 ORP with about 35K miles. Stock suspension, and air filter. Stock size Yokohama Geolanders. Currently using Mobil 1 OW-40 oil. Last tank average, mix of town and open road driving, was 18.3. With open road only at 55, I can expect about 21+. With freeway driving at 70ish, I can expect about 19-20.

 

What kind of MPG do you guys get cruising at 80 MPH? I would think the mileage would drop quite a bit since the 4R is aero like a brick. I haven't driven my 4R on a road trip so I was just wondering. I just went from N ID to SD on the I90 though Montana where the limit is 80 MPH on my Subaru OBW and I got just over 22 MPG and I usually get around 27 on a mix of dirt and highway driving. So I have 2 gas guzzlers.

 

13 - 15 does seem low, especially in light of what you were getting previously. If that stays the norm, it is almost guaranteed that adding f/r bumpers, sliders, and winch will most likely make that 10 - 12.

 

My stock 22 SR5 with 10k miles and typically just me and my 36 lb French Brittany has averaged 19.3mpg. Mostly quick trips around this very suburban area. When I hit the road, pulling a utility trailer and a pair of dual sports, I still get about the same. Each tank will range from 18.x to 21.x. Doesn't seem likely I'll get the lifetime avg up to 20, but also not likely I drop below 19. All good to me

 

If you 4runner is 100% stock and your getting less then 17mpg, either something is wrong(dirty air filter or dirty maf) or your just heavy on the gas pedal.

 

I cruise at 80 MPH often, and I typically get between 17 and 18 MPG depending on the wind with my setup. I have sliders, and run Nitto Ridge Grapplers 275s in SL load range, 36 psi cold.

 

The day I bought my used '18 SR5 I got 20.6 mpg's on the 2 hour interstate ride home on the shitty factory Dunlops. With 500-ish lbs. of armor, a winch and 275 Wildepeaks (e load) @ 40 psi I am getting 16.5 in the winter and 18.5 in the summer.

 

I'm usually around 19-20 lately (warmer weather), almost all back roads at 45-60mph though. Highway makes it drop. Heck, got 15+ towing a 6x12 uhaul at ~60mph (was only 50 miles each way). Stock size LT's (48lb each)

 

Today I drove from north of Houston to Norman OK. Wife and luggage. Over 80 probably 75% of the time. Got 18.2mpg.
Edit to say mine is stock.

 

Its a heavy as shit, brick.... Nothing will help, but go slow. Period.

 

I finally have a vehicle that doesn't require diesel or premium... 17.5 average over my 2000 mile ownership of this 2023 ORP and satisfied with it. 3/2 lift install is next week along with 285/70/17's... I'll reset the computer and report back after 2k with the mods.
