Tucked position of 4 Runner trailer harness

I hooked up my 5x10 utility trailer and the wiring harness is too short when making a right turn in 4 Runner. I found a 48 inch extension (male on one end, female on other). Seems to me when you are turning left (least tension) because the receptacle is on the left side of center the wires may drag the road. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a small spring you can attach to the wiring and trailer tongue that will keep the wires pulled up for left turns but allow elongation for the right turns?

 

I don't have a newer 4runner but have made my fair share of trailer plug extensions and adapters. I'm assuming your using a flat 4 plug, you could make an extension the length you need. I usually leave enough slack that I can use the pin for the coupler to secure the wiring so it doesn't drag.

 

Yes, I’m using flat 4. I think I can get the 48” extension , but only need about 24”. I’ll just make a hoop and use tie wraps to keep the loop formed. If I put the vehicle in the extreme right turn configuration, I can make it long enough to accommodate that length. Then I’ll turn extreme left and see if it drags. If it does, I’ll just have to use a piece of elastic or something , tie to trailer tongue. I didn’t have this problem with Tacoma as it was integrated into the number adjacent to the license plate, more centered.

 

You may want to Google repositioning the entire 7/4 way connector if that is something you may be interested in. I recall seeing several threads brought up on other forums but, do dot have direct links to them.
I do not really understand why it was "placed" in the position it is now. Would be better suited closer to the receiver.

 

What about something like this? You may need another adapter for the rounded end?

 

Looks good. I need to see what the round end does. Looks like it converts 7 pin to 4 pin

 

It was like that on the Tacoma and it was broken off often times when people would offroad with myself included.

 

You could plug the round end into the 4R and then I would think the 4 flat should go into your utility trailer.

I got one of these as a temporary for my boat but then had a trailer shop make me up a custom length extension. That was less than $10 if you have a shop around you.

 

I bought something like that on Amazon for my trailer. Works great and was cheap, only $11.

Yes I found that to be a common issue due to the location of the plugs tucked way up under the driver's side and since I tow multiple types of trailers I really hate kneeling in the mud and gravel So for my permanent fix I purchased one of each type of extensions and just mounted them at a better more accessible location near the Hitch point, Since doing that I have not had any issues because most trailer wiring is made to connect within a few inches of the hitch point.

 

Agreed. If you mount it at hitch point it won’t pull regardless of which way you turn.

 

Someone else posted this idea a year or two and took screen shots. Have not done myself but looks like good idea like a normal truck setup (no kneeling)

 

Was it hard to remove clips from frame? Clips? Screws? No additional cable was needed? It’s not obvious how to unplug the wiring harness on truck side to the receptacle held on the bracket?

 

No don't put yourself in for that bunch of work just get the short extensions and mount frame that holds both sizes plug it into the existing OEM plugs and just mount the new ends about 6 inches or so from the hitch point easy and clean.

 

Any photos of said setup? Great idea BTW.

I’d be very interested in details of your setup if you’re up to it. I hate where they put that oem plug…

 

I've just been looping the extension through the chain loop at the receiver. I have considered using a zip tie instead to keep the wires away from the chain hook, but so far I haven't had any issues. It's easy and doesn't require buying anything.

I do agree that the plug location is terrible. I've been considering a relocation ever since I found the plugs filled with mud after having a little fun one weekend.

 

It is a simple thing to do I did not relocate the original OEM plugs I just purchased the extensions and the mount brackets, I filled the OEM plugs with dielectric grease plugged it into the OEM outlets and then underneath the bumper where it is easy to access I mounted the brackets. Just make sure that the extensions are not too long or Mud and snow may weight down to much and possible damage.

Sounds simple enough. But, if I relocate mine, I'm going to want to get rid of the original plug.
