Non yet - might have to loosen up the wheels if I lose my only key.
I've been a Toyota buyer for many years dating back to 1993. In late February of this year, I purchased a full up 4 Runner - I love it. But, at the closing, I got the "single key" wave off with an estimate of late March or early April for key no. 2. I called Toyota today (Mar 27) and received an update - mid to late July ... maybe. How can a company that had a fantastic reputation let this go so long? Given the length of this problem, I can't believe they couldn't have built a second plant in Japan by now - in fact I DON'T believe it. I'm tempted to give it back.

This is bizarre! Literally one minute before you posted I wondered if there were any updates and I clicked on 4runners.com and your post was the first (it was still the same time you posted). I guess I'm telepathic or something.

I got my new 4Runner January 6th. No updates. I think it is very clumsy BS from Toyota. There are a couple other threads on this, one has a copy of a Toyota USA letter on this, and yes, it states summer (prior estimates from dealers were late-March or April). They have been shipping newer production with both keys, only a couple months production (Oct/Dec-ish) only got one key.

So, if Toyota is watching - what is the average inventory of new Toyotas with smart keys sitting on dealer lots at any one time? Why the hell aren't you shipping new production with one key, plus unprogrammed key inventory, and (a) getting keys to those of us who got screwed some months ago, and (b) programming new second keys for new inventory when they are sold???

As an update, I was at my local dealer March 18. I witnessed a young woman take delivery of an ORP with her dad. I asked him specifically if she got 2 key fobs. She opened up the brown envelope and it had 2 key fobs. She had no idea why I was asking. I told her about the fob shortage. My ORP is due here April 6. Based on her getting 2 fobs on 3/18, I expect I will on 4/6. But who knows? I would be upset if I was in your shoes. It doesn’t seem right for customers who have already purchased to be denied a 2nd key, when future customers are getting 2. I would be demanding something like a Toyota extended warranty! I got a free extended warranty (100K miles, 7 years) because they under-filled my front differential (2016 Tacoma TRDOR) by 40%. If you don’t ask, you might not get anything. They should be doing something to make you believe they understand the treatment you have received is wrong. I hear the argument that the method they chose results in a smaller set of upset customers. But what that approach misses is the fact the treatment you are getting is wrong.

Here's the letter someone else posted a while back. Production in January forward gets two keys (that's when produced, not sold or delivered).

welcome. My opinion is that if you pay $40K+ , you need to have 2 keys given to you. Especially if it's so easy for aftermarket locksmith's to get you one within weeks and online with a programmer.

As has been stated in other threads, if Toyota continues to ship with only one key, it will create a bigger mess as they will need to follow up with more customers. They need to stop the bleeding first, then clean up the blood that was left behind. This was created by a parts shortage, would folks rather they stopped shipping 4runner until they could send them with 2 keys? It would be great for me, as my value would go up due to supply and demand of runners. I bet more people would be pissed off by having to wait longer.

It isn't only Toyota. A new Lexus purchased in December has yet to receive second key. Just asked them on Tuesday and they said no update.

This, I bet everyone would be a lot more pissed if they wouldn't give them the car until they had the second fob.

I just picked up my new Pro. The build date was in December and only had one fob with the sticker on the window. My salesperson informed me of this well before it arrived at the dealer. The second fob will be here before I know it. I do feel bad for those that picked up their cars months ago without a second fob.

Getting all of these new fobs out and programming them is going to be a huge undertaking. It would be interesting to see how Toyota is prepping the dealer service departments for the influx of owners that will need this done. I wonder if they will streamline the process and have it done directly in the service bay with no appointment needed.

Assuming the “build date” is the date it left the assembly line, that means it took no less than 3 months (assuming build date was 12/31/22) to get from Takara factory Japan to your dealer. That seems like a long time. Perhaps not? I just witnessed a woman take delivery 2 weeks ago of a new ORP in Charlotte and she got 2 fobs. I guess you can live in an area where the train travel time can be much longer than other regions within the US

Knowing a little about how Toyota's lean manufacturing process works, they will probably base it on the "Production Confirmation" date and not the "Build Date". You should be able to request these dates from your dealer and is provided to them via Dealer Daily.

Hmm wait for second key or wait for 4Runner.

    Hard choice eh.

Yes, hard choice. Most would take the 4 Runner now and wait for 2nd key. IMO, the issue is not about that choice. It’s about Toyota prioritizing the 2nd key to the first customers. To show appreciation for the business (customers buying cars) I think they should provide the 2nd key to the customers who laid down their $$ first. The idea that you will have fewer upset existing customers , if you do what they are doing now, seems short-sighted to me. Giving me 2 keys for my new ORP next week, while existing customers are still waiting doesn’t sit well with me. It could be me next time? So the number of upset customers is larger than what Toyota thinks. I am upset with Toyota and I expect to get 2 keys next Thursday.

So, they have already upset customers that only have 1 FOB, why would they continue to add to that number? But more importantly, they are using the inventory to get back on track and then take care of the previous customers. From a business standpoint, they are doing EXACTLY what should happen when something like this occurs. If they worried more about getting the previous customers taken care of, then the list keeps growing. STOP THE BLEEDING FIRST, then clean up the mess.

I agree they did what they had to do.

Pissed off customers that took delivery for couple months. Or piss off more customers over more months or maybe even a year. I'd take the smaller number as well.

Agreed! If they continued to only provide one key fob, it would snowball and create a larger mess.
