Who here has the maggy supercharger?
I've been researching and watching every video I could find for weeks now.

Id like to hear some feedback on the members that used it. Anyone do the installation? Anyone change out pulleys to get more boost? How is the tune that comes with the kit? Any other mods(ie. Intake, exhaust. Etc)?

I have a Maggy and I would recommend letting a professional do it. It cost me 1200 for the installation and it took him 10 hours. He's done dozens of them. If I did it I would take days and probably screw something up. He also tuned it for me. But if you think you can handle it then go for it.

    Hey Hossler,

I was just about to post on this very topic as my first post. I'm usually on 4runner.org, but I wanted to check this forum out and I saw your post.

About two weeks ago, I picked up a 2019 Nightshade. It already had the supercharger installed. I drove a rental 2021 down to Los Angeles from northern California. If you dont know, southbound I-5 goes through an area called the Grapevine. The stock 4R was an absolute dog going up the mountain. I had it in 3rd gear and I was losing speed with it about floored. I drove the new one back and it made it up the hill like a champ. IT was really cool to get a long test drive with the rental on the way down and the new one on the way back.

The whole reason I bought the one I did was because of the supercharger already being installed.

Here's the story behind "The Why."

I had a 2008 Limited V8 in great condition that i bought about 5 years ago. The 08 was so good, people thought it was a new car. Anyway, I got rear ended on the freeway about three weeks ago and the insurance totaled it out. The car was still driveable, but the rear frame was bent on both sides. Too much to fix. I actually thought about fixing it and dealing with the salvage title because I loved that car...specifically for that bulletproof V8. I didn't buy a new one 5 years ago because I felt the engine was way under powered. So I was really sad my V8 was gone. It still hurts. The last 4 of the VIN were my daughters birthday. How is that for CARma.

Why do I tell you this? Because, I basically got my V8 performance back.

I feel the supercharger is a must-have upgrade to your 4R before you do anything else. It doesn't make it a sports car, but the vehicle actually behaves as it should. I read up on it and watched all the youtube videos on it. It does what it says it does. For a 10K cost (7K parts, 2-3K install roughly, unless you do it yourself), it better do something special. Let me tell you...It effing does! It feels great. It feels like I wont get eaten up by traffic. I feel like I have my old car back with all the cool new features of the '19. Gotta say, Worth every penny.

Today, I put in the Pedal commander and WOW!!!! I really got it to feel like the V8 again...acceleration, torque and the power I thought I had lost was BACK!!!! WOOOHOOOO!!!

No matter what 4R i was gonna buy, I already made the decision to put the Supercharger in. I lucked out and found one already installed along with a ton of other great options. Now the pedal commander was the cherry on top. this has made the pain of losing my badass V8 that much easier...although I am still in mourning....:angrygirl::sadviolin:

    Bottom line...DO IT.

Hit me up if you have any questions.

Also they do not recommend changing intake and doing any other mods because it will change the tuning. If you do decide to do it then you need to change the tuning. This was what Magnuson told me when I called them.

I installed the TRD branded Magnuson blower on my Tacoma. It was a moderate install that took me 3 days simply because I was chasing tools and I work slow. At the time the TRD tune was overly rich so I went one size smaller on the pulley and it was fine. I also had a AFE intake and TRD exhaust on it without issues. I’d install one on the Runner myself now that I have more tools and more knowledge. I’m not sure about pulley swaps so that would be a question to Magnuson. I’m sure it’s a safe tune that can accommodate.

Just an FYI the Magnuson Warranty is crap if you actually read it.

Normal power train warranty is what, 5 year / 60,000 miles?

For the Magnuson Limited Powertrain Warranty to go into effect the vehicle has to be under 3 year 36,000 miles for the warranty. The reason is because their warranty expires 3 years from the original in service date or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Meaning if you put the supercharger on at 30,000 miles, Magnuson will give you a 6,000 miles of powertrain warranty - Toyota is not going to warranty a powertrain failure with a supercharger added so all in all if you supercharge it you’re losing 2 years and 24,000 miles of powertrain warranty.

Their trans coverage is capped at $2500, rear axle coverage is capped at $1500, you have to have all factory recommended maintenances performed, and their list of things that void the warranty are:

“ABUSE RELATED TO OVERLOADING, OVERDRIVING, PCM RECALIBRATION, MISUSE, NEGLIGENCE, ROAD CONDITIONS, UNAPPROVED TIRE SIZE AND/OR TIRE COMPOUND, AND OTHER NON MAGNUSON PRODUCTS, LLC. APPROVED MODIFICATIONS. MAGNUSON PRODUCTS, LLC. APPROVED MODIFICATIONS ARE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: EXHAUST MODIFICATIONS BEYOND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER (REFERRED TO AS CAT-BACK OR POST CAT); WHEEL AND TIRE MODIFICATIONS THAT ARE WITHIN FIFTEEN PERCENT (15%) OF OEM OR FACTORY EQUIPPED SIZE (MODIFIED TIRES ARE ONLY ALLOWABLE IF THEY ARE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT (100%) STREET COMPOUND).

ANY DAMAGES TO THE VEHICLE AND/OR MAGNUSON PRODUCTS, LLC SUPERCHARGER SYSTEM DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE, PARTICIPATING IN OR PREPARTION OF THE VEHICLE FOR OFF-ROAD AND/OR RACING (ON A TRACK OR OTHERWISE), FIRES, FLOOD, RIOTS, ACTS OF WAR OR TERRORISM, THEFT, VANDALISM, NATURAL DISASTERS, PHYSICAL DAMAGE, CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE AND ACTS OF GOD ARE NOT COVERED.“

If you install headers - warranty is void. If the engine fails while off-roading - warranty is void. Snorkel - warranty is void. Big tires - warranty is void. Pedal Commander - warranty is void. Oh, and if you don’t get them documentation of the install within 30 days of the install... you guessed it - warranty is void.

I looked into this a while ago because I was considering one but man, if you read the fine print, the whole thing is a joke.

I'm not concerned about the warranty since I'll be installing it myself, which voids it right away.

Thanks for the feedback. The installation doesn't worry me much. I've built quite a few high horsepower cars in the past(rx7s and s2ks).

I'm just trying to find a tuner that is close to me(Pennsylvania). That way I can get it street and dyno tuned. Once I locate one then I'll order the charger.

Check out https://overlandtailor.com/retailer-locations and there are a few options for you. You can get it tuned in PA by Master Yota https://www.masteryota.llc but if you want it on the dyno you’d possibly want to drive to RI and see Wicked Mat http://mattminer.com at his dyno shop.

I myself have a MSC 20 4Runner, a dyno in house, and can facilitate tuning your truck.

Definitely reach out if RI isn't out of the question for you.

@hossler1788 If you’re doing the install yourself it comes with a base tune to load, so you could get that loaded and drive up to RI and @WKDMAT could get it all dialed in for you on his dyno.

Awesome. I'll have to look into that. I'll get in touch with him. Thank you.

I'm the past I always put my builds on a dyno for fine tuning. I'm also looking into different pulleys and supporting mods. I get that Magnuson doesn't support other mods mainly because their tune.

My buddy has a Tundra with a charger, he swapped out pulleys, has other mods and pushes 10 or 12 psi. 600+whp. Its quite the build.

Like I said I'm just researching everything right now.

This guy posted a vid on here detailing his supercharger

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/supercharged-5th-gen-new-here.28973/

Also, it wasn’t a magnesson, but I saw another video on a yt channel of some guy grenading a 5th gen. Happened on the dyno in the process of initial tuning of a new supercharger. It was a failure of a rod or wrist pin or something. Sorry I cant find the vid, but I mention it since you have experience building cars. These 5th gens are reliable, but probably not “overbuilt”. They seemed a bit surprised the failure was so complete, and not when they were really trying to maximize a tune.

Thanks, I already saw that guys build i even talk to him on here about it. And I think I know the build that blew up. I believe he's swapping in a 2jz engine now(which would be awesome). It was a procharger or urd charger that he was using i believe.

Plus, im not looking for a specific horsepower number. But I'm not spending that kinda of money and NOT getting over 300 whp.

I did an install on a Tacoma with additional mods, (i.e.headers, smaller pulley, 7th injector, CAI, cam gears).

I spent a week end on it. I tuned it with an APR X1 (no longer available). On the dyno, at the rear wheels, it produced 350hp/350 ft lbs.

I have 110,000 miles on the truck and 90,000 miles on the SC.

Over that time, I have done one spark plug change, one belt change, one SC oil change and have replaced the coolant pump once.

    It has been pretty reliable.

If you do the install, you will be familiar with the parts and will be more capable to work on it in the future.

Hiya! You ended up with a Runner?

I ran that larger K&N filter for a while after you gave me the info on it.

I got one last year at around 30K, I have put 12k so far. I have mix reviews so far, sometimes i feel like it wasn't worth the money and effort. Sometimes i think it was. I'm not 100% sure that spending that kind of money was a good thing. I can only tell a difference in the 40 to 60mph range which I guess is where this thing is needed. I worry a little about the extra parts and things added to the vehicle but it seems ok. We had some issues with some codes at the beginning, but it was a vacuum leak we had and was due to installation. Take your time doing it and get help to check all the work etc. I think it is a very detail job, but then again, I'm not a mechanic so can't say much.

No, I still have the X-Runner.

I visit a few different Toyota forums.

Ah ok. Someone ran a red light so my Taco was totaled so I slipped into a new (at the time) 19 Runner. I managed to get the blower and most of the components off so I have it in storage for when I'm not lazy to sell. It never did run right which I blame the TRD tune.

I have an old turner from my 2014 FJ when I got it supercharged. I don't need it since I am not planning to supercharge my 4Runner. If you think this will work, you can have it. I also live in PA. I will take pic of it if you are interested.

Thanks man. But I meant a tuner as in a person that can tune. Not a handheld tuner.

After researching and talking to those who installed the charger. I decided its just not worth it.

The 2UZ-FE in your 2008 4Runner is a great engine. I think in 2008 it developed 260 hp which is 10 hp less than the 1GR-FE in the 4Runner. It did however develop about 30 to 35 more lb-ft of torque.

Who here has the maggy supercharger?

    I do .

    -2022 ORP
    -Toyota Dealer Installed .
    - Have over 20k on it now
-Dealer has performed all free factory service

Best way I can describe how it feels is to say it’s much more powerful , but It’s power is tempered for reliability. Super chargers ad boost almost immediately , but its my understanding that this magnuson is tuned to limit full boost untill 2nd gear. If this is true it would be to protect the otherwise stock driveline. It still has a nice power ramp up from
Standstill . If you drive ( normal ) you don’t even know the supercharger is there . If you’re towing, or put the vehicle under strain / load , it’s a different story . The supercharger wine is there almost immediately , the acceleration/ pulling power is grin worthy. Also grin worthy is the kick down acceleration between 40 and 75mph. The rear end will squat and the hood will rise . Need to pass ? It can. While towing ? It can .
It won’t let up until you let up or you limit out .

All That said it’s not a rational purchase , but neither was the vehicle I bolted it onto.

I'll be done with my install tomorrow. A few hose clamps and other odds and ends kept me from getting it done today.

I'll run the Magnuson tune for a week or two to see how it is but will likely get the OTT tune.

My rig has 402 miles on it and everything else engine wise is stock and will remain so.....aside from the supercharger of course. I've had it about two weeks and it's starting to get there :)

Take lots of pictures and please share as much as you can. Selfishly I want to do a SC as well eventually and like seeing as much as possible about it.
