Need help - my 2003 4Runner began leaking water the other night with all of our rains. It literally poured into the car on the passenger side, underneath the dash. You could see the water pouring in. I've used towels to keep it from flooding and covered the roof with plastic. Any thoughts on how to stop this leaking?? Is the roof weather strip and moulding the problem?

Thank ypu very much for your quick reply. We used our sunroof only a couple of times many years ago, and the last time it was nearly impossible to get it completely closed, but we did. It's never leaked until now, and I'd hate to try and open it up and then not be able to get it completely closed. I'll try a couple of the suggestions I've read in the hopes they will correct my problem. If not, then the sunroof. Thank you again for your recommendation. Very much appreciated. Will keep you posted of my results.

Sounds like it needs a complete service then. Clean the drains and some good cleaning and greasing of the tracks.

This thread here can help with the cleaning and greasing so it will actually close without issues.

I’ve read that you can access the drain holes from underneath the truck. Someone else here is gonna have to tell you how to find them.

You can but it's easier and better to do it from the roof. That way when you clean the drains out, it goes down the drain tubes.

I had this happen to me. I ran some weed eater string down the drain holes and then blew them out with some air. Mine actually rusted out the front of the frame of my sunroof.

Sunroof drain plugged. Remove the kick panel on the passenger side. Pull up the plastic drain tube and clean the gunk out of the end.

The brain trust @ Toyota put an X shaped fitting on the end of the drains on my '15. That restriction effectively reduced the drain diameter by half. I removed those restrictions and the problem hasn't recurred.

That's what we did to our 2002 Suburban beater truck. Probably did that five years ago and still have the Suburban. Problem solved! We will drive her til she dies and no need for a operable sun roof at this point.

Ya I didn’t catch my leaking in time so it rusted the mechanisms. Was nice to stand up out of it going down the road with someone else driving.
