Can I get your advice & comments please?
    2004 4Runner V8 with 206,000 miles.
I get the Check Engine light on steady.
Shop says Cat Converter bad per code.
Shop says need to replace left manifold and cat converter.

    Is this normal? Common? Typical?

Any things to try, advice, comments, questions to ask of shop?

Lots with more in the works
So the code should be either P0420 for driver's side, or P0430 for passenger side.

Yes, this is not an uncommon thing to happen with those miles.

You can try having just the O2 sensor, the one after the cat replaced and see if the code continues to come back. If it does and that could take several days or be immediate, or not at all if that's the only failure. If it does come back tho, then most likely it's the cat and the whole manifold for that side needs replaced since the cat is part of the manifold.

O2 sensor runs $42 for the passenger side and $44 for the driver's side from Rock Auto.

Manifolds with cat vary in price from just under $200 to around $500, depending on manufacturer. Toyota OEM, you would need to look up the price.

i had this issue a few weeks ago 2004 SR5 V6 192k , i bought a new gas cap and it went off and i passed my smog today... so...

    1. get a new OEM gas cap
    2. tighten your gas cap correctly

then if the CEL comes back/stays on then you need new Cats!
