    Hello all,
I'm new to this forum b/c I recently sold my Tundra RCSB and bought a another 1st Gen 4Runner. This is my 6th 4Runner and best yet.
I started with a 1997 Limited 2wd with 300,000 miles. I quickly fell in love and bought a 1995 SR5 4x4 on an online auction. It showed up with a rusted/busted frame... I spent that summer removing the 4wd components and putting them onto my 2wd and ended up with a sweet Limited 4x4. I sold the donor shell of a car.
My next 4Runner was a 2003 V8 Sport Edition 4x4. What a nice ride it was. It had 200,000 miles, so I just did all the basic maintenance like diff fluids, Xreas removal and paint fixes. Found what I thought would be my dream truck in a 2011 Tundra RCSB 4x4 with a 5.7L. I did like that truck, but I got tired of the 12 mpg's. I drove it all around from Arizona to Florida back to Oklahoma (my home) and it just soaked it up with only a single broken item (front CV axle).
My daughter had a slight fender bender in her 2013 Tacoma and the insurance TOTALED it... We went out and bought a 2011 4Runner SR5 4x4, and it's been hers ever since. Like I said, I got tired of 12 mpg's in the Tundra so I sold it and bought a 1989 4Runner with 22RE and 5-speed manual from a local. This thing was not in tip-top running order, but I've been daily driving it anyway. I've got a huge list of replacement parts I've thrown at it and it's finally driving pretty darn good again. I just drove it on a 100 mile round-trip yesterday and it ran the best it ever has in my ownership. It's at 262,000 miles and climbing.
Next, I spotted this Orange 1984 4Runner on eBay. OMG I had to have it. I put my high bid in and it didn't crack the Reserve. I emailed the owner to wish them luck on the Sale and he said I was only $400 away from minimum. I went ahead and bid it up and won!! Back story on the 1984 is it was an original 3B2 Wine Red color, but the last owner was an Oregon State alumni and had it re-sprayed Orange and went tailgating in it. That person sold it to a guy in Yakima, WA. and he had it for a couple of years and only put about 1,500 miles on it according to the CarFax. Now I get it and realize this thing is CHERRY!! The darn thing was totally gone through with what looks like a frame-off restoration... The 22R has a Weber carb and a header, but everything else seems to be Factory refurbished. I'm not familiar enough with the components yet, but I think the shocks are the Rancho Hummer shocks?? The ride is a bit bouncy.
The 1984 is an SR5 and came with the proper chrome bumpers and grill but I replaced them all with Trail Gear Components. Even the tube doors are from Trail Gear. I also replaced the wheels with some inexpensive Devi8?? brand, but had a set of Super Swamper 35x10.0R17's to use. I might consider going to 37x12.5R15 on beadlocks in the future.
If you made it this far, I've got some pictures below for your reward. In order of my ownership:

hi eric! your pics of the 1984 horrible-orange runner made me want to cry from memories of what i found years ago. a 1985 orange/copperish color that's hard to describe, with black "tiger" stripes, sort of, all of which was original. i was looking for a 4runner and there it was, ugly ugly color, but in wonderful condition. i bought it and i painted it almost immediately. drove it (not quite like you drive yours.... more like a little-ole-lady, which i am) for 5 years, 230K, i think, when i sold it and would have never done so except i bought a boat and didn't think it was fair to ask a 4banger to haul a boat....now have a 1996 sr5, 4wd, limited - my baby. your pics make this 4 runner lover drool....beautiful cars, bless you for taking such good care of them. i hope you'll read my post about clutch/starting issues i'm having - if you've had a stick in the '80s and '90s you've had, you will know what i mean. can't recall if my '85 had the same starting process as my '96. would LOVE to communicate with you - you obviously know what you're talking about and doing, and you love these great cars. i posted today about starting issues with a clutch, or something like that - i'm scared to try to find it cause all this will probably go off into the ether or something. my direct email is ellen7117@gmail.com and, as i said, would love to share stories and ask you questions...thanks again for caring about what i think is the best car ever made. and for your wonderful pics.

I personally think the issue is a bad switch on the firewall under your clutch pedal. These older 4Runners would be easy to steel since the ignition switches get worn out over time. I can remove the key from my blue 89 while driving LOL. Pretty much any Toyota key will turn the ignition of both the 84 and 89.... That's why I have custom buttons and switch cutouts on mine. I don't want to get into detail here, but let's just say I have no fear of someone getting in and driving off with my babies.

Your problem could also be the ignition switch, but it doesn't really sound like it to me. My first check would be the contact switch under the clutch pedal. Good luck.

Update.... I just traded my 1989 4Runner (262,000 miles) for a non-running 2007 Tundra DC 5.7L 2wd. I know you're asking yourself "why would he do such a thing?" Well, my 1989 was nickel and dime'ing me to death. Checking my receipts I've put 150% more money into it than I bought it for. I figured I would never get that money back so why not trade it?? The Tundra was driving but the trans was slipping. They replaced the transmission and it hasn't started since. Turn the key and it just clunks. I figure whoever put the transmission in didn't know what they were doing (first checking the starter and the bolts for the torque converter to flywheel). If/WHEN I get it running I'll have something to tow my 1984 4Runner to the trails with. I'll update here with my progress.

Pictures as promised. I replaced the battery and got the Tundra running but I will still need to do some troubleshooting. It doesn't sound right at all.

Well All, I'm getting this 4Runner cleaned up and prepped For Sale. It has been and still is a great 4Runner. Only required maintenance from me over the past year and half have been rebuild both driveshafts and rebuild the factory alternator. I've had the seats and door panels done up in leather. I removed all the Trail Gear stuff and got it back to Factory bumpers. Just a few more odds and ends and it will hopefully be seen on BaT. Unless somebody makes an offer I can't refuse.
    Thanks,
