Mud flaps and running boards 2023 Limited

We just took delivery on our newest Toyota 4Runner this week. It is a 2023 Limited. We want to install factory mud flaps on the Limited and was told that the factory mud flaps would only fit on the rear. Looking on Toyota.com, while "building" a new Limited, it would let me select the factory mud flaps as part of the build, but not when selecting the retractable running boards. I could select one or the other.

When looking into the mud flaps and running boards further, some dealers have the mud flaps listed with a chart that shows that they fit (up through 2022 models) of the Limited. Others had a disclaimer that they would not fit the Limited.

Does anyone have any experience with the factory mud flaps on the 2023 Limited that you'd care to share? How about the retractable running boards? I saw some areas saying that these two parts were not compatible with each other. I'd appreciate any experience with these. If they will fit and look correct, I can put them on!

We've got a 2023 4Runner Limited that we've had for about 6 weeks/1000 miles. A few weeks after we bought it from a dealer about 100 miles away from us I took it to our local dealer and they installed 4Runner running boards (p/n PT925-89190) and 4Runner mudguard kit (p/n

PT769-89110) - the mudguards included both front and rear mudguards. We obviously don't have the retractable running boards - but the mudguards they installed look like they are screwed into existing holes - and the front mudguards do not interfere with the running boards. Both the mudguards and the running boards are genuine Toyota accessory parts/part numbers.

 

Thanks for the follow up on your experience with the mudguards and running boards. I was seeing conflicting info on the fitment of these parts.

 

I can attest that the non-retractable running boards and the mudguard (splash guards as they're called in the parts catalogue) are compatible with the 4Runner limited. I picked up a 2022 Limited last year and ordered the following parts:

  PT769-89110 Splash Guards, Set Of Four
• PT925-89110 Assist Steps, Running Boards, Chrome Detail

I installed both the running boards and the mudguards myself. @shooter1231 is correct that some of the pre-existing holes need to have their tabs popped out to perform the install for the mudguards, but I didn't have any problems with fitment.

As an aside, I tried ordering the Nightshade black chrome running boards but they were on backorder for a TBD delivery date, so I went with the regular chrome running boards.

 

Thanks @Brostradamus. I've installed a LOT of factory and aftermarket accessories on many cars and trucks over the years. I just haven't seen as much confusion from the dealers regarding factory accessories on a brand new vehicle. The splash guards that I was looking at are the same number you mentioned. When looking at individual dealers who list this kit, the fitment guide shows that it fits this model and trim package when entering in all the details (including Limited designation even though it doesn't show Limited in the confirmation box). When scrolling further down on this page, it throws up 2 disclaimers saying it will not fit Limited models. Then just under that in the fitment chart it shows that it does fit this vehicle. I've never had an accessory like this that didn't fit from Toyota, but I've also never see this level of confusion on the fitment notes. I'm glad to hear that they fit in the factory holes since we live in snow country and I didn't want to damage any factory corrosion protection when installing these.

I'll look at both the chrome and non-chrome to see which one is best. I talked to the local parts manager who said they are re-working the automatic running boards. I like the clean look of the auto boards but heard that they can catch and hold ice, snow, and mud which could cause them to bind up sometimes.

Check out the screenshots from one dealer's parts page. Some other dealers had similar wording while others didn't.

Yep - looks like Brostradamus installed nearly the same mudguard and running board accessories as me. Mudguards (

PT769-89110) are identical. And the running boards I had installed (PT925-89190) are the Nightshade version of what he installed. I think the running boards are exactly the same - except the Nightshade version doesn't have the chrome detail on the side of the running boards - they are all black. I do like the running boards by the way, they have a nice rubbery non-slip surface on them - and they don't stick out too far.

 

If anyone found a good article / video how to install mudflaps on a Limited with automatic running boards I would highly appreciate (I think OEM mudflaps for SR5/TRD might not clear automatic running boards).

When I remove my TRD mudflaps to flatten them to fit bigger tires I was worried about breaking plastic tabs. If my Limited requires messing with plastic tabs like my TRD I will just pass. But would be nice to have mudflaps especially since I have bigger tires (285/70R17s).

I installed these yesterday with no problems. They are an easy install but no instructions come in the box. There are 2 hardware bags in the kit that have the screws and 3 different sized clips for the screws to go into. The screws and metal clips replace the factory plastic push-in clips. The attached PDF shows the correct location of each size clip. @kmeeg, the clips come out and reinstall real easy. Just use a small pocket size screwdriver to release the center button of the clip, pull the center section out as far as it will go, and then pull the entire clip out. I've never had any trouble with these. Most of the clips will not be reused on the installation in favor of installing the screws that come with this kit.

PT769-89110 mudguard kit would fit/work with 2022 TRD Sports.

Its listed as incompatible on Toyota Parts Online.

 

Here's a thought - instead of making people dig through your post history, why don't you just post a couple of those photos here to help people out? You're already familiar with where those photos are.

Many don't have the knowledge to confidently approach an autobody plastic anchor/rivet other than a screwdriver and ultimately with anger and often times undesirable results.

Like a drywall anchor for hanging things, the center pin of a plastic automotive anchor needs to be pulled up/out first like a drywall anchor screw needs to be unscrewed so the anchor legs that protrude outwards from the screw/pin becomes relaxed allowing for easy removal of the entire anchor.

Fast-forward to the 2:50 mark for a removal demo, or watch it all.

 

I noticed some of the holes didnt lineup, did you have to make your own holes and drill new ones into the paint?

 

did u have to take the tire off to do the ones on the front?

 

Turn the wheels full lock . Left or right to give working space. Easier when you have someone assisting by holding the flaps in place.

 

if you plan on going offroading you may want to consider just leaving the mud flaps off. I actually removed my kit because they were scraping doing just minor offraoding. I bought the delete kit to fill in the void in the back. I am NOT a fan of the automatic running board. I had them in a Ford Explorer and swore to myself i will never put those on any cars in the future. Again, if you plan on going offroading you may want to skip the OEM running boards and get some rock rails. I wished someone would have told me that before I bought the 4Runner with OEM running boards and mud flaps.
