2001 4Runner Limited. Had it 20 years with virtually no issues. Last night noticed that the passenger side headlight and amber running light are out. Driver side both work, as do turn signals and rear lights. There are two bulbs out and it seems unlikely that they would both fail at once, but not impossible. I checked all of the fuses in the engine compartment and inside the cabin and they're all intact. Recently had to have some wiring replaced after a rat climbed up in the engine compartment to get warm and chewed on stuff, resulting in crank/no start. Same thing happened shortly after we got it when we lived elsewhere. So, maybe there was more rat damage than was found. Is there other stuff a non-mechanic should check before taking it in? Thanks in advance.

Besides physical wiring damage, check for corrosion on and in the connections. A multimeter may help diagnose the issue.

Always worth a try replacing at least one of the bulbs. It's not impossible for both to go. If you have a multimeter, check for 12v at the light.

Welcome from Wisconsin! Electrical... yuck! A huge percentage of electrical problems on vehicles are 'ground' related.

I second the bad ground. Especially in your part of the country.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Yeah, grounds are generally ignored when people do electrical work on vehicles. Thing is, ground points are just as important as any other contact point in a circuit. they must e kept just as clean, and corrosion free as any other connection in the circuit.

    Good luck!
