Is there an option to change the way the blinkers work? Currently I have to hold them in place for a lane change, ie there’s no “3 blink” option.
Is this a setting anywhere? I’ve never seen any other car do this.

    No.

It's mildly annoying especially considering the 3rd gen Taco has the 3 blink setup, but it is what it is.

You have to hold your blinker? Mine works the exact same as every other vehicle I've personally owned... Don't have to hold it, just click it down for a left turn and up for a right turn. Only different blinker experience I've had is on the newer F-150s, it kinda ratchets/springs back unless you really push on it and lock it into place. And definitely not a fan of it... my F-150 didn't have a ratchet style blinker like that.

The temporary blinker (when you only press it halfway to change lanes where it only blinks 3 times) in the 4Runner is weird. You have to hold it for as long as you want it to blink. If I “fully” click over the yes, it locks like a normal car.
I mean, I can make my car blink once only which, as a lighting designer, is pretty fun.

Definitely hard to get used to this after having it in multiple vehicles since 2001. Wondering if its possible to swap the blinker mechanism from a Tacoma. (queue the outrage)

It’s just an odd thing to have, and I keep forgetting about it. The 4runner isn’t a daily driver for us.

I don't know that I've ever had a three blink on any previous vehicles. Turn the blinker on, turn/merge, turn it off if it doesn't self cancel. Same as my motorcycle.

Generally speaking - a mechanical turn signal switch that activates a relay to turn the blinker on will be not do the 3 blinks but an electrical turn signal switch that is in input to a control module that has an output to the bulb will do the 3 blinks.

Most modern day cars have a feature which you can initiate a turn signal 1/2 way down before it engages all the way and it will automatically give you 3 or 5 blinks.

my lexus and Bmw does this. The 5th gen 4runner is so old, it doesn’t have this feature :-(

I never even knew there were different ways to use turn signals. I feel so uncultured.

    LOL! You peasant!
Just an odd thing to be used to. I’ve never seen a car that didn’t have that feature

Yes... Very annoying indeed. I hate having to hold it in place for a quick lane change, so awkward sometimes while steering... First world problems, I know, but my 20+ year old BMW has this. WTH Toyota!?

This is yet another reason why I like Toyota. If you want an automatic blink interval by simply bumping the turn stick, buy a Ford.

    We have turn signals?

jokes aside: I personally hate the auto 3/5 blink option. I don’t need that many blinks most times to make a lane change. If I do I just click it into place and click out the 1 time out of 25. I would probably use my signal way less if I knew it would stay on longer than i need it. I already hate using my signals when I’m waiting in designated turn lanes. I think that is annoying and unnecessary. The only time I think you use a turn signal is when you are doing something unexpected.

Off subject, your motorcycle comment got me going.
I had a 1976 Yamaha RD400(bad for driving record). It had a wonderful signal canceling setup.
The signal would turn off in 100 meters or 10 seconds whichever came LAST.
So if you are waiting to turn at a light it would cancel in 100m. If you are on the highway @60mph(yeah right), it will cancel in 10 seconds.
    It worked great.
I cannot figure why this did not become common place.

My 2013 Toyota Camry has the 3 blink tap...it also has auto headlights. My 2016 4Runner has neither...I should also point out my 2001 Camry had auto headlights too. No idea why Toyota went "cheap" with the 4Runner in those areas.

I'd try changing your blinker fluid, see if that helps.

Had the 3 blink on my 14 Mazda 3, was pretty cool on a sporty car. But definitely not safe or ideal IMO, not enough blinks to insure proper communication.

Blinker isn't for fun, or just for you. Its to communicate what you are about to do, are doing and have completed (3-5 blinks are not enough). Seeing some of the responses, now i know why there are so many accidents and bad drivers. lol

Yeah, 2018 tundra does the 3 blink thing for lane change but 2018 4 runner does not.
Odd sometimes to see little modern car-like features on a Tundra but lacking on a 4runner.

Probably some truth to your statement for sure. Growing up in Detroit though you don’t ask, or give to much warning you are changing lanes, You just change lanes when you have a chance.

I tried changing my blinker fluid, but I have a clogged flagellator valve caused by deteriorated fender gaskets. Last week I had to replace both bumper switches. Always something!
