On my next oil change I plan to try Valvoline Extended Protection (I have been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance). I hear that the Valvoline runs more quiet. We shall see.

Exactly lol. Compared to a diesel it’s pretty quiet :p

    Thing about it is...

When you are standing over it with the hood open, or even listening from outside with the hood closed, there is so much going on with the loud fan, OHCs, their timing chains, valves and fuel injectors, all at the top of the motor in your face, nothing really stands out other than the fact that it's one noisy mofo.

It's the fact that a lot of that gets filtered out when you are sitting in the driver's seat at idle and the characteristic "ticking, clacking" or whatever you want to call it is more pronounced behind the wheel and makes you wonder if your motor is about to come apart until, over time, you realize that's just the way it is.

I took my 4Runner in to Toyota and they said the noise was fine and normal. A couple weeks later, all my dashboard lights turn on and I had to tow it to Toyota and they said it’s a blown head gasket.

Well that sucks. 45K is awfully early for a head gasket. What model year? Have you ever had overheating issues prior to this, inspected or tested the oil/coolant yourself to confirm?

I would imagine that would be an exceedingly rare problem for a car past it’s initial break in, and still so new. Was kind of noise was it having when they said it was normal? Any problems in those two weeks before everythjng lit up?

I’ve never heard of blown head gaskets making noise, unless it was extreme. Extreme as in blowing out huge vapor clouds out the tailpipe. Did that happen?

At least the problem should be covered under the powertrain warrnty.

I have the 4.0L V6 in a ‘06 Tacoma and its upgraded version on my ‘20 4Runner ORP. I find that it’s a very quiet engine. But then, I run heavier oil, usually 5W-30, than the recommended 0W-20. I just went to my summer weight 0W-40 Mobil1.

My 4R was noisy on 0W20. Switched to 5W30 and eliminated all but injector noise.

I have a 2020 and a 2021 ORP. I have been testing 5W-40 T6 ROTELLA. It sure quiets these down. I’m running just for the summer, might make a decision on what to run for the winter.
