    Hello,

Just bought my first 4Runner. Looked at Broncos, Tacos, Jeeps back to Tacos and finally found a Lunar Rock TRD Off-road Premium with a Predator package.
I'm still in the Honeymoon stage.
The first drive home along the state road doing 60, I put the tailgate windows down and was instantly hit with the smell of exhaust. Granted it was new-car exhaust and smelled like rainbows and unicorns, but after five minutes it was too much.
The exhaust exits near the rear bumper. I am assuming the fumes travel up the tailgate into the open window.
This does not seem safe, and perhaps something Toyota should have figured out. Crazy?
Is the black tailpipe extension from the Predator package the culprit?
    I'd appreciate any feed back.

    Congratulations on your new 4Runner!

It’s physics, not a Toyota thing. If you could roll down the rear window on other vehicles you’d get the same thing. If you’re on a dusty road you’ll quickly fill the interior with dust if you leave that window down. Opening the other windows can help alleviate the exhaust smell.

I can get flow-through air by running my vents open/fan on and the tailgate window open an inch, other windows closed. But I almost never drive with that window down.

I figured it was the aerodynamics of a big squarish block driving down the road and the exhaust dumping into drag caused by the rearend. I was just hoping for a work-around.

You’ll find that the exhaust smell varies depending on speed, wind, air vent fan, how far the rear window is down, etc. You won’t always smell it with the window down. I have my rear window down a lot and I’ve only noticed the smell once or twice. And it was on the highway.

Try again tomorrow and you might not smell it at all.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your purchase.

When driving on the freeway when it is raining, or snowy dirty roads, the back window will get covered to the point of being unable to see out that window. That should tell you about the airflow behind the truck when it is moving. That being said, driving with only the back window down is going to draw all of that inside.

When I choose to drive with the tailgate window down (and I often do in warm weather) I always have one window (at least) on either side up front to keep incoming air moving through the truck and keep the exhaust air out.

Welcome! I bought mine back in 2019 and still in the honeymoon stage. Partially because the previous 20 something years of driving Chevy products left me traumatized and thinking that I'd be wrenching the rest of my life. It's such a relief to have a reliable vehicle. and it's sexy as balls too.

Congrats!!! If you crack your front windows, or better yet, all of them, you wont suck in so much exhaust. Just a crack helps a lot, but if my back window is coming down, all my windows come down all the way. Feels better than a convertible or an open top if you ask me!!!

So far, just over 700 miles, and I love it more as each mile passes.
Does anyone have suggestions on a quality roof rack? I have looked at UpTop, ARB, and of course, FrontRunner, Rino, Gobi, and Southern Style...
Since I'm a professional photographer, I like to shoot from the top of my vehicle. (Don't worry, I'm not standing on my roof now) ARB offers an aluminum rack with aluminum mesh. I also haul a 16' canoe. Maybe in the future a RTT.

Welcome. Many who lower the 4R rear widow for dog air go to a muffler shop and for a minor charge reroute the exhaust tip to behind rear passenger wheel similar to 4R TRD Pro exhaust which gets rid of fumes in the negative pressure area behind truck.

    Welcome from SD, Ca!

I love driving with that rear window down and the moonroof open. Great airflow on cool summer nights! Downside however, is it get's pretty dirty on the ceiling.

Either way, enjoy your beautiful truck and good luck going down the mod-hole lol

Welcome. Beautiful color choice with Lunar Rock.

I can’t recall having that issue consistently when I had my 2016 limited. I definitely don’t have that issue with the 2020 Pro and side exit exhaust. I always have the rear window down for the pups.

Question for some more experienced in this area. Are you able to bolt on the rear section only of a TRD Pro exhaust? That way you don’t have the louder muffler.

No the tail pipe sections have different flanges. But a quality exhaust shop can either bend the tail pipe or cut and weld on a bend so its side exit.

This sounds like a safe solution. I wonder why Toyota didn't design side exhaust from the factory? It's incredible how quickly I got a headache the first time I drove with the rear window down. That was my first 4Rr lesson.

Well in the owners manual it states to not drive with the window down, for that reason... its not nearly as bad if you have the sunroof open and the windows down.

The trd pro exhaust does have side exit. But some find it to loud and drones at certain rpms.

I have a 2021 Lunar Rock Pro and love the color! I still get compliments on the color.

I have the side pro exhaust system and don't care for the drone, but have become accustom to it. I would have preferred a quieter exhaust system so that I would not have to turn the radio up louder to hear it.

I lower the rear window all of the time. I have never smelled exhaust fumes, but the rear headliner does appear to be darkening slightly (road dust or exhaust soot?). I really like the way the air flows thru the vehicle with the rear window down (only with all the windows down) and it is much quieter as well without the air turbulence being stonewalled with the rear window being up.

I drive with mine down a lot. But, only if other windows are down. I usually don't get any exhaust coming in.
