Getting 7mpg?

Hey I got my first 4runner about a month ago. I get 7mpg I just figured out. It's a 2004 sport rwd. V6 4.7. any ideas why? I don't really want to get rid of it, but I can't afford 200$ a month on gas. I'm ok with in the teens. But single digits. No.

 

I can't believe that mpg. It certainly is not right. and you should take it to a good mechanic. Our '06 4R SR5 Trail gets 17-17.5 mpg regularly and on one trip across the coast range in Washington State we got over 20! Good luck with it. - Ted

4.7 V8?

That's not normal - but those aren't known for fuel economy. My old 4.7 Tundra was getting around 12-14 mpg.

 

something is dragging you down did you check your fuel filter to see if it might be leaking or brake sticking because something is definitely wrong. take it to toyota have you changed you air filter just thinking of any possibilities because that is not right. LARRY B

 

Gotcha. Well I got it fixed yesterday. New spark plugs and air filter. Works well now!

 

4th gens are prone to having seized brake calipers. if it doesn't get much better, check the temperature of your wheels after driving for a little while. if you put your hand near your wheels and can feel more heat coming off of one than the others, you may have a stuck caliper.

now might be a good time to do an motor/diffs/transfer case oil change, too.

 

I changed the spark plugs and air filter. Now it does have a bit of a squeel when I drive. And when I brake it's a bit shaky.

 

is it the motor that is squealing or the brakes? when did it start squealing? if it's shaking when you're braking (see avatar) then your rotors are probably warped and need to be replaced, or you could be having caliper issues.

 

Something in the wheels. But not when I brake. I noticed it a couple weeks ago. This thing is costing me so much money.

 

drive it around for 10-15 minutes on the freeway and when you get out, check if one wheel is giving off more heat than another. just put the back of your hand close to the wheel. lots of info in these threads...
