Check and see if the remote connect light flashes red and green, alternating, then goes off. The light is right by the SOS button.

If so, then some part of the vehicle’s Remote Connect system is still set up to the “port/ in transit” setting. The dealer may have not changed this setting to “dealer/ delivered”, during the PDI. Once changed to the “dealer/ delivered” setting, the car will be able to connect to the Toyota servers within about 2 hours. A voice prompt will come on over the car’s speaker and the connect light will go to solid green.

@steelevo where is this light located? On the remote or in the vehicle somewhere? This is something I can check before spending hours at the dealer haha

It's right next to the SOS button on your 4Runner's overhead console. When you start the car, you'll see the light cycle between red and green, then either go off or rest at red or rest at green.

Reading all of this stuff with the key fob issue makes me appreciate more my actual key…

However, I do love the features that the keyless entry provides!

I have '23 ORP and have adjusted the settings multiple times. Including the beep volume and I have not had any issues....

Has anyone yet found a solution to this we can do without a dealer visit?

We have a 2023 TRD ORP and just readjusted the volume settings on the lock confirmation beep yesterday and the single fob we got when buying at a dealership in Idaho (husband is active military and we currently live in Washington) now won't lock or unlock the doors. I haven't even contacted a dealership here for any reason as it's brand spanking new.

All other lock methods work (back hatch buttons, door buttons, touching door handle). It still starts just fine with the fob in my pocket.

I'd really hate to take this thing to the dealership to work this out, but I'm assuming it's a must to get this issue fixed?

Trip back to dealership seems to be the only solution.

Thank you. Hopefully they can get me in quickly and get it taken care of. How frustrating on a brand new vehicle!

Just wanted to confirm this software bug is a real thing on 2023 TRD ORPs. Got mine two weeks ago and the next day was fiddling with the door lock volume. Took me a couple of days to notice the key fob no longer worked. THANKS TO THIS THREAD I was able to take it into my very skeptical dealer and get it fixed. The service advisor was quite belligerent and claimed one of the mods I'd done must have caused the problem. (Heritage grille, raptor lights, Sherpa rack, Greenlane sliders, black front and rear bumper valences.) He said, "I've worked here 8 years and never heard of this." Wanted to charge me $220 just to diagnose the problem. I went home, printed out some of the posts here, and went back the next day. Took 10 minutes. Tech said it is very rare but a particular sequence of keystrokes when adjusting the the volume turns off the entire wireless receiving system on the vehicle. I now have the volume set to zero and don't plan to touch it again! Thanks again to the earlier victims of this bug who posted the solution!

Thank you for this! I have an appointment for next week. I plan to use your quote "Tech said its is a very rare particular sequence of keystrokes when adjusting the volume turns off the entire wireless receiving system on the vehicle" to hopefully get in and out of there quickly.

Yeah, the unfriendly service advisor originally told me it would be 3 hours. Earlier in this thread there is an image of a dealer workorder that describes the problem and the fix. Print that and take it with you! Worked for me.

Thank you! Will do. Hopefully the service advisor they send me to will at least not be a jerk about it. I'll have the prior work order from here and your quote in hand next week.

Awesome. The service tech who I was supposed to see on Wednesday just called to get the vin number so he could order and cut a new key. He didn't even read the paragraph I typed out to explain that there was an issue with the fob connecting to the vehicle. He told me the issue was impossible. Over and over he said it was impossible. He spoke to me like I was an idiot, despite not having even read the entire explanation for what was happening. His solution was for someone who is less than 2 months into ownership of a brand new 4runner and was only given one key fob to begin with was for me to have to purchase a new fob and wait 2 hours for it to be cut and programmed? This was my first experience with a Toyota tech. I am so frustrated.

The service tech is trying to make the issue a money making charged venture. SMH.
Surprised Toyota didn't fix the bug before 2023 rollout.

Just drive into the service bay, park it sideways and block all the doors. Then get out, lock it up tight and toss them the FOB. Tell them to move it themselves. When they start pressing the buttons on the FOB and nothing happens, don't give them any more info other than " I don't know, It just started happening" and that's why you're there.

Sometimes less info is better to get your point across....

For those who had this fixed already...What is the dealer actually doing to fix the issue? Disconnect battery?, new software for the the radio?, what exactly is the fix? Is there a TSB on the issue?

Apparently no Technical Service Bulletin on this. Very rare problem, apparently, caused by a certain series of inputs to the user interface (while following the manual's instructions for adjusting door lock volume). I had the same obnoxious treatment by my "service advisor" but when it actually got to the technician he told me he has seen this before and it is a software bug. He hooks up the computer to the vehicle and sees the wireless is turned off - turns it back on and voila, fob works! 10 minutes.
Jentoe22 is getting the same treatment I got. Making a new key is idiotic. The receiving system inside the vehicle is turned off. period. There is nothing wrong with your fob! no wireless key fob will work until it is turned back on. BTW this has nothing to to with the proximity-related keyless entry, that is a whole different system from the key fob wireless system!

Thank you for this. I’ll be quoting it directly. After the way the tech was with me I am not comfortable going to this dealer without exactly what they need to do to fix it.

I shouldn’t have to fight to get a tech to accept that the problem I’m having is not all in my head. I’m waiting for the service manager to contact me sometime today.

I hope this isn’t the norm for them. It’s the closest dealer we have to home while my husband is stationed here. This is my first new car and this is really making me wonder if it was even worth it buying new for the warranty and service perks just to have to fight to get a tech to listen to me when a problem arises.

Unfortunately... some service department are lost without a TSB.
Probably not get paid for diagnosis by Toyota - if issues cant be resolved.

Easy way out is just to claim that Issues cant be reproduced. I have been there with my cold weather front-end groaning noise.

    Just a hunch.

Don't be discouraged. Every car brand is unique with its own inherent issues.

In comparison to Fords and GMs :)

Oh, for sure. I’m not discouraged by the quality of Toyota (this is our 3rd-we love Toyota) just that our older rigs were used and we handled all of the maintenance ourselves.

The only reason we bought new was to give me one vehicle that we know is under warranty until my husband retires from the Army (I’ve been left high and dry a few times while he’s away from home).

I’m disappointed solely by the actions of the tech. I get that issues can pop up. That’s no big deal. Heck, it’s why we decided to buy new and cover our butts with the warranty. I just don’t want to feel like I’m in for a fight anytime I have to approach the dealer for help. Super frustrating.

Unfortunately.. this is the first of such battles.... Been there.... This is my second new truck. Honda VCM Vibrations Issues.. now Toyota

You may want to form a working relationship with a Friendly Service Rep. They do sometimes go beyond call of duty. It also boasts their ranking with their peers.

    Good advice. Thank you!

I spoke with the service manager this morning. He was super reasonable and reassuring. He said I could come in at my regular appointment time on Wednesday and he'd handle it himself.

They weren't able to get one of the techs' 2020 4runner to do the same when the door beep volume was adjusted, but I'm hoping just taking a peek at this thread and seeing posts from other folks dealing with this issue is enough to find a way to resolve it. He said he didn't expect it to be a difficult or long fix.

I'm feeling better about it, but I won't forget the name of the tech who disregarded my explanation and treated me like an idiot over this. It's not a good look. I would have a hard time trusting the work of a tech who refuses to believe a problem is happening simply because they haven't experienced it first hand. People who treat folks asking for help in that way aren't folks I want to deal with, period.

Welp, I’ve been at the Toyota dealership for an hour since my 10:30 appointment time. I really didn’t expect it to take this long to figure out? Hopefully they can get it fixed. To be continued…

You guys are not going to believe this. So, the manager walked me through the problem. It was exactly as described here. Some connection that shouldn't be happening toggles the wireless off when the volume is adjusted. It took almost 2 hours. I was in a hurry to get home to check on our young dog. So, I didn't test anything out in front of them. I figured they had done all of that. He said specifically that he asked the tech if I adjusted the volume would it happen again. The tech said it shouldn't.

Welp, I got home and tested the fob. The buttons worked to both lock and unlock the car. But, there was no audible chirp at all. So, my dumb self went in there to adjust the volume believing what the tech said about it not happening again. AND, here I am with the buttons on my key fob not working again. Womp womp.

I don't think they did the update on the head unit others mentioned in here when they said they were unable to get the break to happen again after they had their issues fixed. No idea what took almost 2 hours. I'm right back to where I started. How stupid and frustrating.

Now you get why some have not done any more adjustments to the beep volume after their remotes were fixed. Sorry for all of this. When do you plan to return?

I emailed the service manager back (I prefer a paper record of communication on stuff like this) and asked him to let me know when they had a permanent solution and I would return then. He said they planned to submit a Dealer Product Report with Toyota regarding this concern.

I hope, somehow, they can find a permanent solution. Until then, I'm just stuck using the door handle or back hatch buttons to make sure the thing is locked. Frustrating. This is my first vehicle with a smart key/push to start system. I'm missing the ease of an old school key and regular fob at this point. At least there was no worry about software bugs causing issues with locking, unlocking, or starting the vehicle at all.

    Hello All!

Didn't want to revive a thread, but wanted to check in. 2023 TRD Pro. Adjusted the audible chirp volume today. Boom both fobs dead. Has 1002 miles on the clock. Took delivery 2 weeks ago.

I hope you’re able to get a permanent fix. I never did hear back from the service manager here in Tacoma, WA. Life has been a little dramatic lately and we just haven’t had time to risk another 2 hour appointment resulting in a temporary fix the past few months.

We plan to take it to the dealer we bought it from when we visit home in June. I hope they will give us a fix or software update to not have to worry about this ever again.

    Good luck!

Welcome to the dead- fob club! Hard to believe they still haven't fixed this issue...it has apparently been going on for months. Dealer can fix in about 10 minutes.

Interesting that you actually got two fobs -- still waiting for them to send me the second one they gave me an IOU for. I guess the supply chain is improving but they are prioritizing new purchases.

Same! We bought in January and only got 1 FOB with no updates on when we’ll get the 2nd.
