On the weekend pulled brother in law's 5,800Lbs travel trailer for service approx. 50 miles. Just to see how the 4 runner will handle it. I have a brake controller and he has the weight distributing hitch thingy. Assuming 10% the tongue weight was approx. 580lbs.
The 4 runner sagged a bit in the back but still had little forward rake. We also tried it without the weight distributing hitch and it dropped additional 1.5 inches or so it had a bit of a reverse rake. So the weight distribution thing definitely helps and works.
There was a good amount of hills and valleys, speeds up to 65Mph. Engine temperature never budged, don't have a gauge for transmission so don't know temps on that. Never bottomed out and we went few miles on a pretty rough gravel road.
Reason for the run was to test it out as we are looking for a travel trailer. I like by brothers in law as it is very comfortable with a pop out, queen side bedroom, and bunks for kids.
My only other experience is pulling a 3200lbs fishing boat.
It definitely felt heavy, but was able to go up hills, stable, brake controller worked great.
Probably will not get the same one as my brother in law as his @ 5,800lbs was dry weight, would need to add to that another at least 1,000lbs so that would be probably too much for the 4 runner.
i'm trying to find something around 5,000lbs that has queen size bed and bunk beds. There are few options around 5,000lbs to 5200lbs might have to go for that.

5K is max towing on these 4Runners. I would highly recommend sticking to something around 4K or less!

Also, 500# is max tongue weight. Some trailers will be closer to 15%, so make sure to check before you decide what to buy.

Get a transmission cooler. And, some folks will use an Ultra Gauge or Scan Gauge to monitor transmission temperature.

I pulled my enclosed car trailer empty once with the 4Runner. It weighs around 4500lbs. It pulled it but it wasn't ideal. The 4Runner would probably tow those trailers ok if it is flat ground and shorter distances. If you are planning on towing through mountains or long distances Id look into a Tundra or other full size truck.
