Rabbit Ears Pass Trail

Well I finally got my ears wet (no pun intended) took this baby up as far as I could up the trail that leads to the Rabbit Ears in Steamboat Springs. I was the only one who took a vehicle up there, every one else was hiking. I went as far as I could, probably 3/4 of the way up then we hiked the rest to the top. It could have gotten tricky if I went further, after all it was me with my wife and two young children, no backup if I got stuck! Towards the top there was a huge snow pile and water crossings in mud (no rock bottom) so it was probably a good decision. It was really steep I'd say at least 45 to 55 degree grade in loose gravel so I do not have the balls to attempt that yet! I went farther than I probably should have based on my experience but this 4runner ate it up no problem...just think if an experienced driver would have been at the helm! I love this truck!

Out of curiosity what would you rate that trail? Moderate...Difficult...Black Diamond, ect...? I cannot imagine driving up that last stretch unless I was alone and had a recreational vehicle...I definitely could have made it farther than I did but this is my primary vehicle and I was alone essentially...but it was great experience! Gave me alot more confidence as I was going down lincoln creek road up by independence pass near Aspen without a care in world...water crossings galore! Made me realize this is a machine built for greatness! I just gotta step my game up as the pilot!

 

Beginning easy, last steep pitch moderate...maybe. I went in august last year and it was pretty much dirt the whole incline. There were stock block style chevys and fords up there. I foolishly gunned it without proper inspection and thankfully had no problem making it up
