Cold in Omaha

    Should've joined this a while ago--

    Own a 2001 4Runner with 166,000 miles, sole owner/operator--mostly in/around town, but has taken me across the country.

    Routine maintenance mostly. Gas mileage is starting to wane at about 16/gallon.

    Should I use an octane booster or use premium gas? Anyone??

    At this point after that amount of miles, i would say keep going with the girl that got you to the dance.

    Being a previous Master tech, I would say to steer away from continual fuel additives at each fill up.

    An additive every 6 months or so i see no issue.

    Welcome from Wisconsin! The added octane won't (depending who you ask) help the mileage, if it does, it will be minimal. Around town.. mostly, 16 mpg. is nothing to crow about, but also nothing to scoff at... stop start, around the corner, some more stopping, starting etc. I have a 20+ yr. old S-10, 2wd., it has the same problem. It's dependable, that's why it's still around. I'm not sure where you live, but the cold weather doesn't help mileage either. Sounds like you have lots of miles left on the 4Runner though.
