Hey everyone, I wanted some input when it comes to towing because I really don't know much about it. I've done my research but just want some info on here. I just got my 05 sr5 a month ago and I am planning to move from Chicago to Dallas which is a little less than 1k miles. I'm planning to rent a 6 by 12 Trailer from uhaul. What type of tow hitch should I consider buying? Any maintenance I should check before the trip? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Anthony and welcome to soon be Texas! I live in Austin and I’m sure you’ll love the new home. I’m no expert however, I’d advise you read your maintenance/owners manual. Maybe change out the differential fluid, especially the rear, top of brake fluids. I’m sure other people with more knowledge can chime in! Good luck with the move my dude!

    Hi Anthony
I pulled a pop up camper all around Texas and dozens of Uhauls with my 06v8 SR5. Matter of fact, I am renting one tomorrow to distribute some extra furniture to family ajd friends tomorrow. A couple things to keep in mind

    1. The 6x12 uhaul is a good choice. Double axle and long enough. Keep in mind, it will be a bumpy ride. Up the rear tire pressure a bit.
    2. You need a 2" ball for Uhaul trailers. I'm assuming that your SR5 has a 2" receiver. You don't need a drop hitch or anything like that. If you don't have a receiver, don't skimp on a cheap one.
    3. UHaul trailers have a brake that is activated by motion. That is all the springs and stuff you see near the hitch. This works but can be abrupt when activated. Nowhere near as smooth as an electric brake controller. Keep a safe distance from other cars. It's gonna take you much longer to stop than normal with a loaded trailer
    4. Keep the weight (heavy stuff) in front of the trailer axle. This will keep the trailer stable.
    5. Tie down stuff in the trailer or it will find its own resting spot.

I also agree with what @Mohoman says about fluids even though he is in Austin. Lol. Just kidding, I grew up in Austin. Parents and in-laws are still there.

Good luck with the move and welcome to Texas!
