Just figured this out and thought others may be interested

trying to cheaply put a paddle on my Yakima round bars. I am mountain bike nerd and have a ton of parts lying around.

A standard mountain bike stem (ebay for under $10) will fit yakima round bars. The part that clamps to the bike steer tube of a 1 1/8 fork will slide right on. Then the clamp area typically meant for handle bars is now parallel to your truck...simply undo the clamp and lay your paddle shaft in and re-bolt. Obviously you need two...one on each bar. Likely work for shovels too...not an axe though since they don't have round handles. I plan on getting a few anodized red ones to match my Barcelona SR5. Lots of stem sizes out there...measure and order carefully. There are 2 main steer tube sizes in the mountain bike world. 1 inch and 1 1/8th inch. The 1 1/8th fits yakima. Then there are a ton of handle bar clamp choices. This is a 31.8 mm and it fits my kayak paddle shaft perfect.

The stems also work great for load stops as well for the kayak. One last trick for those familiar with bike parts. A star nut for a 1" bike fork fits inside a yakima round bar...allowing you to use bike stem caps to customize instead of using the stock yakima plastic caps. possibilities are endless on ebay with stem cap colors if you want to get creative.
