Well let’s do it. I can’t do this upcoming weekend because of plans. However, happy to meet anytime after that.

I don’t know when the trail opens back up. It is closed during the winter usually.

The Uwharrie web site says they are open thru December 15 then open again on April 1.

Sounds like Brown’s Mountain trails are open thru Jan 1. Anyone make that run before?

 

Yep I have been to a good amount of trails here in NC (not saying all) and am starting to look to go to Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia.

I would rather hit up Hurricane Creek vs. Brown Mountain. I found brown to be lame and my wife and I (who have off-roaded in Arizona) think it is lame. I miss the good off-road trails back west. The best I have seen here are Uwharrie and Hurricane Creek. It was fun driving on the beaches in OBX as well for a different type of driving.

 

Hurricane Creek sounds great - I made it part way a couple years ago but there was too much snow and ice. Seems like you have done a lot to your 4Runner. Did you drive Hurricane before lifting your truck? I have not lifted mine. @GrantA

Yes I was lifted and fully locked. However, I saw a stock Tacoma do it with no problems. I put it in 4wd to exercise it but I could have done it in 2WD.

 

How is Hurricane Creek looking lately? Thinking about going this Saturday. Will be my first offroad experience.

 

Well I haven’t been lately. Do you have someone to go with? If not I will talk with the Mrs. about going up. I last heard they cleaned it up a bit and should be easier.

 

Thanks for the clarification, Grant. I have no plans for "upgrading" the suspension, as I prefer to have a lower center of gravity, among other things, so it's good to know what is and isn't passable.

Thanks for the update. I have a Jeep friend comkng with me but would be awesome if you could make it. You offered it to me when I first got my runner but wasn't really ready for it back then..lol. Let me know and we can meet up.

No set time yet. We are easy going but I don't want it to be too busy. Any time in kind since it is quite a haul for you?

 

Looks like Hurricane Creek is closed due to a fire. Just saw that last night..

 

Sad to hear. Maybe another time. With all the rain I wonder what caused the fire (lightning)?

 

Fire??? Hopefully there is not too much damage. I'm thinking about heading to Hurricane the week after Christmas - maybe Thursday, Friday or Saturday. My son would be coming in his Jeep. Anyone else iterested?

 

Have not seen any details but it's burning since November 23rd. Just North of the trail.

 

@GrantA do you recommend the skid plates you've installed? I upgraded the front one but has some damage to the OEM skid's further back.

 

It depends. You going in rock gardens? If so I would go with steel. Otherwise I believe M.O.R.E. Off-road makes a good skid plate. There are other manufactures I like more but they cost a lot more and I got a steal of a deal of them used in like new condition.

 

Found someone posted on Facebook they went on Hurricane Creek today. I guess it is back open.

 

Oh darn it...I hate when they don't update the forest service websites. Well, took me forever to put my new skids on anyways. Now I feel better with some more protection. What Facebook page are you on?

Went with Rival 4x4. Full skids plus tank, aluminum.
