Hey all, I recently purchased a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T's and wanted to provide my thoughts on them. I know we discuss all terrain tires quite a bit on this forum but I can confidently say I'm pretty into this set.

First off, previous tires to get an idea of where we've come from. This is between my 2011 Tacoma and 2016 4Runner. Toyo A/T, Cooper Discoverer A/T, Goodyear Duratrac, BFG KO2, Nitto Terra Grappler, Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Nitto Ridge Grappler, and finally the Baja Boss A/T.

I've had the tires for about a month now but it's been a hell of a month so I feel I can give my preliminary impressions.

Mount and balance: Local Toyota dealership had no issues getting these installed. Driving on the highway there is no vibration.

Noise: These things are quiet. I know they're new so we'll have to see how they wear in, but as of now, absolutely no road noise that I can discern.

Dry: They're A/T tires on pavement, do people care about dry traction with truck tires? Haha

Wet: I live in the Pacific Northwest so it's wet here quite a bit, the past month has been wet and shitty. I can say that these tires have performed well, no slipping or hydroplaning.

Snow: I had to drive from Seattle to Spokane for the holidays through Snoqualmie Pass. The pass was closed and turned into a parking lot, so I said screw it and took random side "roads" through the pass. This was a mix of gravel, slush, water over river rocks, compacted and loose snow. Snow depths ranged from a few inches of compacted snow to about 8 inches of loose snow.

    20221122_211712.jpg

My wife who is from Maryland was not about this detour at all haha. The tires on the other hand performed phenomenally well. I have lived in the PNW most of my life and have ventured deep into the mountains so I've been on various types of roads and trails. The Baja Boss's kept predictable traction, never slipped, and allowed us to skip about a three hour backup on the pass.

Ice: Getting to Spokane the temps were about 25 degrees after the high for the day was above freezing. The road was a sheet of ice. At about 60mph I felt a few shimmies and slowed down a bit. Never lost complete traction and made it home safe.

All in all I'm extremely impressed with these tires. Evidenced by the list of tires above, I'm always looking for the next best tire, as I believe that good tires are the single most important item to have. Some of the tires I listed above were good, but these Mickey Thompsons are great.

Specs: 285/70/17 Standard Load mounted on SCS Ray10's on a 2016 4Runner with 2" of lift all around

Price: I paid about $1,100 out the door with mount and balance.

Disclaimer: I have not been compensated, or contacted by Mickey Thompson, this review is wholly my own.

Wow! What a great review. This is one of my top choices. Your 4runner looks great. These tires look big, are they bigger then your previous ridge grapplers?

I've been keeping my in these too. I like they are 32.8in vs common size of 32.76in. I like even they are slightly tall they were 49lbs if i'm not mistaken.

I'm also looking at cooper discoverer at3 4s which are just 45lbs. Wish there a review from members like this. Snow performance and dry rocky offroad performance is my priority.

Thank you! I think ya'll would do well if you ended up picking these up.

Nope these are the same 285 size I've had in the Ridge Grapplers and Falkens. I will say however visually, they seem taller and narrower than the Ridge Grapplers.

Weight was a concern for me as well, and these are right on par with the rest of the competing A/T's which is awesome!

Excellent review! How would you compare these to the Falken Wildpeaks? I am seriously considering the Falkens after my KO2s are done. I want a tire that actually handles the rain better than the KO2 which is just meh in wet conditions in my opinion. But these look so badass and are actually not much more $ than the Falkens here where I am. The only thing that I am not sure about is that for my size of tire 285/55/R20 these would be 65 lbs! That seems pretty darn heavy!

I currently have the cooper at3 4s 285 70 17 p rated. I would NOT recommend them. They arent bad performing tires. Do good rain/snow/dry. BUT they flat spot after sitting, plus they do not balance 100% and took a shit ton of weights. The shop i go to told me coopers have balancing issues(and this shop has a road force balancer with the finger plates)There's so many better choices. If your looking for a light 285 with great reviews. Maxxis razr at.(285=43lbs)

Thanks! I actually loved my Falkens so I don't think you'd go wrong with either. Agreed on the KO2's.

I personally try to shave as much weight as I can when it comes with tires because I drive so much and the 4Runner already gets terrible milage. 60 pounds is a lot for sure. Try contacting Mickey Thompson and see if they are making more sizes if you don't see yours. These tires just came out within the past yearish and I know they are expanding their sizing list.

That's interesting feedback for Coopers.Good to know that they are good for snow and dry. Mine will never sit as its driven daily for school runs. Wheel balance is something I have to check. I have to check Maxxis as I did not see them at Discount tire. Wow 43lbs for 285/70R17? That's very close to stock Nitto 265s at 41lbs.

That's unfortunate. I usually don't hear anything bad about Cooper. Well, aside from being heavy, and having a tendency to pull one way or the other.

Hopefully Good Year doesn't ruin them.

Maxxis has some badass MT's. I've read good things about the RAZR AT also.

Had a set of these on the grand cherokee and they cupped and got super loud (not sure of load rating). However, the jeep dealership that put them on just got their road force balancer and admitted to screwing up because they didn't know the equipment. Had them rebalanced and it helped but damage was done. Traction was great, noise and wear were only issues and I could point the finger at something besides the tires.

Just ordered a set of P285/70/r17 cooper discoverer rugged treks so will let you know how they feel when the lift and tires are installed next week.

Edit: this was a thread about Baja Boss- they were a CLOSE 2nd place. Just couldn't find enough reviews because they were so new. Forums seem to point to they are a great tire

I think MT bought Dick Cepek and the Baja Legend EXP is a DC design.

    Which DC's do you have?

That would make sense, I have the trail country EXP. I looked earlier this year and DC site had redirected so the acquisition must have closed. I e got about 25k on mine right now but just looking to the future. No issues at all with the bad boys.

Looks like you went with XL load rating. Seems like you gain bit of strength and still 2lbs weight benefit? I guess its a win over Falken SL tires that are little heavy. I wonder how they would be in wet and snow since aggressive tire sometimes not best for on road wet and snow conditions. Keep us posted.

I went with MT Baja Boss AT after my Toyo AT3s were past their life. I have taken them all over the hard and rocky Arizona desert and they have been amazing. My favorite tire for sure!

Yes xl which equals to a c load tire and lighter than my wildpeak s/l . So far I’m enjoying them , they are 3peak rated so I’ll see how they are in snow when that time comes around . Very amazed they really have no road noise .

Old thread, but I'm also from the Pacific Northwest, LOVE to hear this. Big Mickey Thompson fan, felt sometimes like I'm the only one recommending them. My Baja ATZ might be discontinued now but I might go mud terrain next.
