I've always used ramps. Seems to me more of the oil is likely to drain out of the oil pan that way.

At the risk of stoking a controversy:

With the use of ramps, how much oil will remain in the drain pan that wouldn’t otherwise? A shot glass full?

    Shot glass = 1.5 oz.
    4R oil capacity = 6.6 qt. = 211.2 oz.
    1.5 oz. ≈ 0.7% of 6.6 quarts. Less than 1%.

    I think ramps are okay.

Only reason I don't use ramps is because I rotate tires same time.

    Gotta jack it up anyways.

Why use ramps when there's plenty of room under the thing in the first place :notsure:

Mine is stock height, I can't comfortably get under it. With the RCI skids it has about the same ground clearance as my Volvo wagon.

I used ramps and still hit my head...

I've done changes with no ramps on cars that had much less ground clearance -- but they had the filter on top of the block. Makes a big difference when the only thing ya gotta do under the car is drain the pan and reinstall the bolt!

My new car arriving in 2-3 weeks (I hope) has the filter on top of the block. Can't wait!

Fair enough…probably the simplest way to explain to the OP why the postt looked like a troll.

I’ll take him at his word that it wasnt, because I believe it’s possible to have gaps in knowledge (even if they are glaring, huge, and embarrassing:poking:;)). Also, maybe he hasnt told us he has a Limited, and he was right all along haha

4H is OK on pavement only if you are going straight and or very subtle curves. Otherwise it 4H should only be used on icey and or other surfaces that would allow 'slipping'. When you are on DRY pavement and turning in 4H, it will cause binding as one side is not able to 'slip'. Wheels in 4H want to turn at the same ratio. When turning in 4H, the outer tires don't rotate at the same ratio as the inner tires - that's why you get the binding/tight feeling.

Well, as long as nobody is checking the oil level while it’s on the ramp!

But it’s ok to do the work on the ramp because you can put in almost all the oil and it’s fine to start. Top it off on the ground while it’s level.

also, when it’s on then ramp, It’s easierto look around and inspect.

    At the risk of :deadhorse:

The OP said that he was going slow, implying perhaps that it was less of a concern since he didnt go fast. CV joints and transfer case dont care. Actually slow is worse since it’s turning the tightest and causing maximum binding. It’s like somebody standing with 150lbs on their shoulder. And someone else slowly pushing on your knee joint with more and more pressure. It doesnt matter if it’s slow. When it pops, it pops.

What a horrible analogy. Im gonna give myself a time out for that visual.
