    DB439983-CB7D-41A1-8AA3-CC3AD5E646A0.jpg Hello all,
Was just involved in a minor rear end collision during heavy bumper to bumper So Cal freeway traffic, which pushed me into vehicle in front of me. Collision avoidance system activated while braking hard to avoid hitting vehicle in front, which I believe caused vehicle behind to hit me. No significant damage to front or rear. Air bags did not deploy.
However, dash lights now show orange collision avoidance symbol, red air bag indicator light, red seat belt warning light (as if you don’t have your seatbelt on), and a message “airbag malfunction - See dealer”.
My question is two fold. Were the air bags supposed to deploy but they didn’t? Do I have to take it to dealership to reset everything?
    Thanks for your insight.

The only way to read the codes. However, my guess is OPDS re-calibration= zero seat weight for the passenger seat.

I didnt think the 2020 had the radar necessary for collision avoidance. In any case, if you made contact with the car in front of you, how could the accident have been caused by collision avoidance system? Seems it did what it was supposed to do as best it could.

Do you have insurance? Did the guy that hit you from behind have insurance? I would think the guy that hit you would pay you for damage caused by his hit, and you would pay for damage to vehicle you hit. And damage to your front end, like sensors etc.

I wouldnt touch anything…call your insurance with your info and have them tell you what to do. I dont think you have radar, but in any case, resetting, replacing, or recalibrating sensors might be needed, and that might be waaay more expensive than a new bumper cover.

To answer some of your questions. Hard to explain how collision still occurred up front even with accident avoidance system in full use, but it did. I believe primarily due to being hit from behind the instant I stopped, yet momentum pushed me forward enough to contact vehicle ahead.
Vehicle ahead incurred no damage and left the scene before CHP arrived. Vehicle behind never pulled over, basically a hit and run leaving me holding the bag.
Yes I have full insurance and plan on contacting them once I decide what I’ll do concerning minor body scuffing and re setting system. If it’s less than my $1000 deductible I may get it repaired and reset myself. Not sure if the body shop can reset/recalibrate or only Toyota dealership can. ????
When you say you don’t think I have radar do you mean accident avoidance system? Cause I do.
I’m agreeing with you. I plan on not touching anything until I decide which course of action is best to reset the system. Will let insurance company direct the next move.

Ah, ok. For some reason I thought radar came out on the 21 model year.

Then there’s a possibility that might have been damaged, those things seem to be fragile.

Most likely bus since you have the car at the dealer already, see what they find. I'm sure they'll quote you some major collision repair.

Most likely. They’re not called stealerships for nothing. Haha.

Do you know for a fact if resetting, repairing collision sensors can only be done at the dealership? Or can a body shop also do that?

Any major Bodyshop can re-calibrated front collision sensor, either they sublet or send it to the dealer but yes they can
