You will have to do your research and find what works best for you. I've been doing it for about a year and this is what I've found:

Rigd - well known, lots of add-on options but sticks way out and further limits departure angle (given with hitch mount but more than others). Pricey but you get what you pay for?

Rigid - don't know much about them but read at least one thread where someone complained they had crappy welds. Haven't looked too heavy into them. Seems cheaper and slightly tighter fit compared to others

Wilco - also well known, also lots of add-ons, but expensive (like Rigd) and also sticks way out

Dirtcom - fits a bit tighter and has better departure angle than others. Also has add-on options (I'm leaning towards this, waiting on SSO)

Detours of Maine - had a great design, sold a few but lightweight and maybe not strong, great departure angle, great price, terrible communication. Ordered one and then had to cancel. seems out of business as website and facepage taken down, may have been a Ponzi scheme. Avoid like the plague

Southern Style Offroad (SSO) - should release a design soon that fits tight but unsure of departure angle or price until release. Design taken from someone on another 4runner forum that developed their own custom fit

Others please chime in and let me know what I've missed.

There is a video of a Wilco, Rigd, and Rigid on Subaru's. Wilco stuck way out and rattled a lot on semi rocky ground. Rigd had poor departure angle. Rigid seemed the best of the three. But, Dirtcom is who I would probably buy, but SSO builds some nice kit, so I'd be willing they will get a well optioned, great ground clearance, hitch retaining, tightly held tire swingout soon. And they will be the most expensive.

They claim their pricing will be competitive and maybe less than others (maybe due to a lack of add on options designed into it). They are still working on pricing and final design so only time will tell. I'm holding off on purchasing Dirtcom until I see the final design and pricing. It should be the tightest fit by far because it was designed for the 4runner where others are universal.

I just can’t believe how these things hold value. I’m seeing them sold locally, used, for $100 off and that’s it!

It's becasue everyone wants one now. This is an inexpensive way to get into a full sized/over sized spare without the $2k to $4k price point for a full swingout bumper.

Westcott Design apparently just redesigned one specifically for the 4Runner but its not on their site yet. They make super high quality products and you can bet it will be top notch and likely expensive when they release it. I'll reach out to them and see if I can get a release date and price point.

I watched the original being built from conception, and handed off to SSO. There is some threads on it somewhere.

Just keep in mind every one of them gets in the way of the Backup Camera and some do offer relocation kits (at a cost of course) I relocated 2 cameras for friends on a 19 and on a 20 and pain in the butt both were (minor but still) :annoyed:

Something to keep in mind is that some of these will reduce your departure angle quite a bit.

The factory receiver is what limits that angle, stock. So anything the comes out of that will touch down first. Might not be a big deal for most, but not something you want to find out in a “full send” or (even partial send) situation.

This is why I initially ordered a DOM carrier before he split. Also why I'm leaning dirtcom. I did email Matt from SSO to see the they could shorten that receiver for a custom build - will see what he comes back with. I don't need 6.25" sticking straight out. If I can get it down to 3-4" that would be doable - I'm not using it for towing, just need enough space to put a recovery receiver in and it only needs about 1.5" depth behind the pin hole.

Anyone ever think about buying a bumper for a Jeep, such as a JK or an XJ, and just modifying it to fit in the receiver hitch?

My thinking out is that instead of buying one of these super expensive ones that fit in the receiver hitch, just buy a four or $500 Jeep bumper and just modify it. Can't be that difficult or expensive to add a receiver mount to one.

I have had the Rigd for almost two years and it is great. Very good welds and no issues. Checkout my build thread for more details.

I really wish I had a rear carrier right about now. I came home from work and my rear tire was flat. It's already dark and the last thing I feel like dealing with is trying to get that damn spare from underneath. I don't know if it's ever been down, it's probably rusted solid.
