Hello I have a new 2023 4Runner with 1400 miles on it. It’s been super loud since day one and I noticed some slight creaking. Last week there was a huge pop under the car and I thought something fell out or hit me. Pulled over, nothing obvious. But these creaking sounds have gotten worse. Video attached. Context, these are most noticeable if the car has been sitting for 2 hours or more. I am shifting out of park into R rolling a few feet, stopping, shifting to drive rolling ect repeat. I am going straight in this video but also happens when turning the wheel trying to park or make parking corrections. Went to the dealer they checked transmission and suspension and said they saw nothing. And ofcourse they couldn’t get the noise to appear. All info is helpful to me!

Edited to add…I cannot get video to upload from my phone and will come back to upload when I get home from work!

it’s a creaking/squeaking sound in the time being if anyone has experienced something similar!

Going to assume its the brakes since it makes it when sitting.

You may need to leave it overnight for them. But they may also not do anything if is the brakes.

Mine does the same. Had the dealer look at it. Said nothing was wrong and said if your shifting into gears and the truck was cold etc the idle is higher and will make a noise going into reverse, drive etc.

Not sure I buy it but get what he’s saying. If the idle kicks down it’s less but some of it is brakes for sure…that creaking ….trust me I get it.

Ebrake cable loop hanger on mine was making that sound on the rear lower control arm. I put a little grease on it and the noise went away just have to find some thing better than grease washes of after a wile & creaking comes back.

Brakes. It's the very slight rotation of the disc against the caliper pads. It's normal with most automatic transmissions when shifting from P, R, N or D.
IMO, ToMoCo, could solve their own problem by offering a manual transmission.
Mine has done it since day one. No need to take it to the dealer. They can't /won't do anything about it.

I can get mine to make those noises on command. It’s easier to make those sounds when the brakes are cold. It’s the brake pads sticking over the rotors, and it can make that sound if you hold just the right amount of pressure. I think I can get most of the cars I’ve ever driven to make the same sounds. The solution is to hold down the break tighter, or to release brake pressure a little bit if you’re making big changes to the steering angle. Just don’t let the brakes drag at that pressure. It seems harder to make it do this when the brakes are hot

Hi. I replaced the original OEM rotors/pads earlier this year for aftermarket ones (Centric). That exact same groaning noise in OP's video appeared. It was driving me nuts. So I went back to OEM rotors/pads. It was fine after a while, but the groaning noise is back! So what's the solution? Is it more than just the rotation of the disc against the caliper pads? Is it the caliper pins? Or is it something else? Were there steps that you guys did to solve this issue?
Also, I noticed that the groaning sound appears in the morning when first driving it for the day, but it eventually disappears afterwards when driving about a mile or so (give or take). When arriving at my destination, I test it by shifting into R then D then R again, and the noise is gone. The next morning, however, the groan is back.
    Thanks in advance.

As others have said, brakes at cold temps and slow speeds. Mine does it too. I've had other cars that have made the same type of noise.

You'll also hear it if you ever go off-roading.

But I'm sure there has to be "something" that can be done to get rid of the groaning noise once and for all. Mine's a 2017, and it never made that groan since day one for about 4 years, even at cold temps, rainy days, slow speeds, off roading, camping, etc. ... until now, when I finally replaced the original OEM brakes earlier this year. So it can't be something that we have to just "grin and bear it." There must be a solution out there.

Can you reproduce this after driving for a while when parking? Or is this only happening during the first drive after the 4Runner has been parked for a while (overnight)?

If it's the first drive of the day or after a few hours it's the brakes rusting

Sound goes away after driving a while. Yes, mostly happens during the first drive of the day.

I think this is just a “characteristic” of this car. I hate to sound like a dealer service writer looking to get rid of someone lol.

It sounds like a sort of stiction between the brake pads and rotor. Maybe they make this noise under specific circumstances due to everything comes together.

Caliper construction clearances/, the soft control arm bushings, and normal moisture in the air. Combine these factors and you get the “whale song”.

Have you ever watched a plumber “sweat” a copper pipe? Once you put direct heat on metal, you can literally see water evaporate off the metal. I think once you drive the 4runner a bit, it sweats the rotor and pads, your friction changes, and you dont hear it anymore.

I can actually hold my brakes right at the perfect threshold to where I can feel the vibrations.

Best bet is to use stock pads and rotors if you werent getting the sound before. Although I have OE brakes, so no guarantee
