possibly a dumb question....but is there a quick way to tell if a 4Runner is xreas equipped? I'm looking at a 2022 Limited, dealer info mentions "Automatic Ride Control Suspension"...same thing?
I've heard the xreas/KDSS system can be a pain in the assets...not sure to what extent, but wondering if I really want it on my vehicle

All Limiteds (and the Limited variation called Nightshade) come with XREAS. No SR5, Off-Road or off-Road variant like the Venture or Pro come with it. I think the only other model to have XREAS is the ill-named "Sport" that was released, as I recall, in 2021. That model is basically an SR5 but with the Limited's 20" wheels and XREAS suspension.

XREAS shocks are red, which can be another sign.

Personally I love XREAS. It's amazingly effective at preventing body roll and brake dive, and results in more composure over bumps too. It works fantastically, and I also really like that it's not electronic. No computer or sensors, it just cross links the hydraulic fluid of the shocks. So it works automatically in a purely mechanical fashion.

But yes, stupid expensive to replace with another XREAS system. So most people just switch to regular shocks like Bilsteins when their XREAS springs a leak.

Singleminded covered it well. Here's how those red XREAS shocks look.

They only come in 4runner Limited and TRD Sport trims. I won't call them as "Automatic Ride Control Suspension". They are just shocks that are connected to eash in a cross linked pattern. As Singleminded said they are completely mechanical. They are the best riding shocks in 4runner world imo. If they ever fail other that you see any leaks visually you won't get any lights on dash. So you don't have to replace with XREAS. You can replace with any regular shock and you don't need to go to Toyota for that.

The KDSS (available in some TRD Offroad) you mentioned is completely different and has nothing to do with shocks, its about sway bar. It has complicated stuff anf you get lights on dash when they fail and you have to go to Toyota dealership to get it fix. You have to fix it, I don't know of a way to remove it and not have dashboard error light. But it won't help help in comfort department like XREAS.

@Singleminded & @kmeeg ....thanks, that's exactly the info I needed. I got a glimpse of the rear shocks and that's exactly how they look. will go down tomorrow and see what kind of deal they'll give me on my 2019.
