Click noise in reverse from front end (video)

I'm getting this click noise, consistently from the passenger front (sometimes drivers too), in reverse. Not in drive.

Had the shop foreman at my dealership listen and he says "it's the caliper". That isn't a caliper noise.....so I'm hoping someone here has had a similar issue.

This started after a trip to a hilly area a couple months ago. Noise started then, and only in reverse. I was baking up onto a steep driveway everyday for a week.

 

Have you try jacking up the vehicle, not on gear and spin the tires to see if it reproduce the noise? Check front suspension, nuts and bolts. to see if anything is loose. Maybe a rock stuck in between caliper and pads. Sound sure like metal to metal. GL.

 

Hmm, mine does the same thing.

 

Is the click happening while backing up - and braking? If so, it could be the emergency brake self adjusting.

 

Mine comes from the front end, and is louder when the skid plate is off. I could maybe see stuck caliper pins or something brake related because the sound is very similar to the sound the baking plates make when gravel pings off them.

 

Thanks for the responses. The sound happens when I press the brakes in reverse, not forward. The sound probably is brake related.....had to think long on this one, but it makes sense. It's just the loudness of it which was making me second guess that.

 

I just went through this. I had an alignment done a month ago. Started having the exact problem you are describing last week. I crawled under my 4R this afternoon and checked the LCA bolts. They were all at 65-80 ft/lbs. I torqued them down to 129 torques (fun!) and tested it out. No sound yet, I’ll see how it goes. It goes back to the shop on Monday. Hopefully my bushings aren’t torched.

 

Agreed on LCA torque to 130.

 

I had this issue on my Tacoma after about 10k miles. Its the brake pads shifting slightly in the calipers when the brake is applied at very slow speed.. The noise happens at the guide pins on top of the brake pads. I solved the problem by adding an additional brake pad retaining spring (shaped like W) on each caliper. Each caliper has a place for an upper & a lower retaining spring but for some reason they only install one of these springs from the factory. Cheap & easy fix.

Absolutely brake pads shifting when you apply the brakes. Try the clips.

 

I'd been having this problem recently. Turns out the clip had popped off the inner pad. 30 second fix with a flat blade screwdriver - no jacking or wheel removal needed.

 

Did you ever find out if it was the brakes?
Mine is doing exactly the same noise. Front passenger side.
