Auto Trans fluid level check bolt is solid, not hollow. What should I do?

    Hello everyone -

    I have a 4th Gen 2007 auto-trans 4runner.

I went to change the trans fluid today with cold engine.

I first removed the 5mm overflow plug and about 1.5 quarts came out. I expected none to come out since the engine was cold.

Then I removed the drain plug and another 1.8 quarts came out for a total of 3.3 quarts. This total sounds about right.

The 3.3 quarts total is a normal amount for a dump and fill so why did so much (1.5 quarts) come out when I first removed the overflow plug?

If it was overfilled, that would imply that, at correct level, only 1.8 quarts would have come out if I first removed the drain plug instead of the overflow plug.

Is 1.8 quarts the usual to come out for a drain and fill? Seems a bit low?

I replied to your post on the other 4Runner forum, I'll paste it here as well.

It must be running and at the correct temperature to check to fluid level, when not running a lot of the fluid is in the pan instead of circulating in the transmission.

About 3 1/2 quarts is about right when draining.

Here's a link to how to do all of this and correctly check the fluid level from Tacoma world, it's the same for our transmissions, there are several topics for this on this forum as well if you do a search for them.

ok, that makes sense - thank you!

The fluid that came out of the auto trans wasn't red at all - looked olive-colored like motor oil. Thicker than I expected too like motor oil. Don't know if it was changed before or by whom since it had a previous owner.
