2022 with Steering Wheel Shake - Need Advice

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    Don’t know if this is easy to implement on the new 4R since I am still waiting for my 5th gen, but I have a Dodge HD which are legendary for death wobble. I cranked in a little extra caster and it drives great and I have had 3 different set of tires since the adjustment with zero problems. Caster change doesn’t affect the actual alignment, it does increase straight line steering stability and the tires still wear even. The only drawback is it will increase the turning radius slightly.

    I'll 100% agree with that one! And I'll add that there are a pretty decent number of shops who can balance tires correctly, but their machines are not properly maintained / calibrated - which throws everything out the window too.

    I keep reading about people taking their tires to get rebalanced at the same place over and over again, and I don't understand it. I have had mine rebalanced and gotten them back with a wobble. Instead of going back to the same shop, I took them to another shop and got them perfect.

    Also, as far as lug centric, I don't think most tire techs are as meticulous as I am when mounting them, so that could cause an issue for some as well.

    I don't accept steering wheel shimmy as a characteristic of the 4runner. It has not been an issue for me except when I had the stock tires, or out of balance tires. I'm not the most particular person in the world, but I wouldn't want to drive a car with a wobbly steering wheel.

    Agreed but alas I’ve had five balances at four different shops on five different machines between my two sets of problematic tires.

    I was on OEM Limited 20” rims and OEM touring tires for 13k miles without noticing a problem.

    Then I switched to the 17” OEM TRD wheels found on models like the Pro and Venture. That’s when I first noticed the shimmying.

    At first I tried E Load Michelins on those TRD rims. That gave me both shimmy and body vibration through balances on two different machines at two shops. Then they got RoadForce at a third shop. The vibration lessened, especially at lower PSI, but the intermittent shimmy continued.

    Then I switched from the E Load Michelins to 115 load index Scorpion ATs. I had the intermittent shimmy plus mild vibrations after the first balance, which was on a new Snap On machine that had not been used in any of the prior attempts, but was done by the same shop that did the first attempt on the Michelins (i.e. they’d just gotten a new machine).

    Then I took them to Firestone and had the experience described above. No signif vibration now, but intermittent shimmy remains.

    Wonder if its worth rebalancing those tires during your next scheduled tire rotation at the dealership? Mine was rebalanced at 800 miles. Though its OEM Stock 245/60/20.

    Just got a brand new 2022 4Runner TRD Pro this Monday and having the same issue around 50-65 I get steering wheel vibration… not all the time just sometimes. Seems like this has been a issue with the 4Runner for awhile now. Even saw they had a lawsuit against them for it. Do you think I should have my local dealer take a look at it since it’s brand new? Also is the 4x4 knob shifter supposed to vibrate all the time?

    You said the TRD Pro is new. Are the wheels and tires stock TRD Pro wheels and stock 265/70/17 Nitto tires that are “vibrating?”

    Welcome to the forum.

    Absolutely Back to the dealer asap would be my suggestion.

    I have a stock ‘21 Pro- no shake/shimmy

    Had a ‘17 SR5P with stock wheels/tires= no shimmy
    But with after-market wheels and larger tires = shimmy with no fix after 2 sets of (new) tires & 3 rebalances.

    Yes the shifter vibrates. It annoyed me when I first had my Pro. I like the dial better.

    Currently at a Toyota dealership getting an alignment and wheel balance and rotation, little over 5000 miles on a 22 4 runner trd pro and getting that vibration at above mentioned speeds.

    Yes it did, at 60-63 there’s a very extremely small vibration, unless I was looking for it I wouldn’t notice it. Service rep did confirm that aftermarket wheels and tires are installed in USA and most of time alignments are not done correctly or done at all.
    They left tire pressure at 32 cold and read 35-36 after a few miles. Don’t know it tire pressure is a factor.
    4 runner tracks straight and smooth.
