I am considering the RCI or RSG Metal works rock sliders. The RCI can be ordered with 5 degree to 20 degree angles. The 5 degree is relatively horizontal and makes for a better step when entering the 4R.

Has anyone installed the 5 degree version and provide a picture, so I can tell if it still functions as a step?

With regard to the RSG, I don't see an angle option when ordering. Has anyone installed these, that can provide a picture, and indicate if they function well as a step?

Thank in advance for the help.

RSG has options for angled or flat, top plate, grip top plate, no top plate.

I have the angled ones, and you can definitely step on them. But, it's not much lower than the door sill. I imagine the flat ones would be a tad lower.

@Thatbassguy - thank you for responding. I have a few questions.

    1. With the angled ones, it is easy enough to enter the vehicle by just stepping over them? When we got our 4R in Predator package, we found the included rails were in the way, as the flat area for your foot was in a poor location. Since we were constantly stepping over them, I removed them and they were not really rock sliders anyway. So, before I order them, I would like to know if they are angled up, are they easy enough to step over.

    2. If I go with the angled ones, does it make sense to leave the top plate off? Or is there value in having the top plate on the angled ones?

    3. Since yours are angled up, could you include a picture of what they look like?

Thanks in advance for addressing my questions.

I usually step over them. Sometimes I use them as a step as well. Sometimes your pant leg will rub on them as your getting in, and get dirty. This can be avoided pretty easily, though.

I have the top plate, and it looks good. I was concerned that if the dog tried jumping in the car, he might get his leg stuck if there was no top plate.

Honestly, if I ordered again, I might skip the top plate. I think they would work fine as a step even without the top plate.

I recently noticed some surface rust forming on the underside of the top plates, around the edge where it meets the tube. I could probably be more thorough cleaning in those corners after trips, but without a top plate it wouldn't be an issue at all.

This was the day of installation:

    And, after a recent outing:

You're welcome! I love talking about this stuff!

Let us know what you decide. Or, if you have any more questions. :)

@Thatbassguy Thank you for the quick reply. My wife and I are older, so I want to be sure I order what will work well for her. Do you think she would have any issues stepping over the angled bars? I can always go with the 5 degree ones. But if the 20 degree are just as easy to step over, I may go with those. If I go with the 5 degree ones, I will definitely go with the top plate, since she will likely use it as a step.

The bars in the predator package were useless. The foot platform was too far back and so you were constantly stepping over it. For my wife and I, that proved to be too fatiguing, so they were taken off. Now we have no issues getting in. So I want to make sure when I add rock sliders, that they do not create the same problem as before.

Please feel free to add your recommendation.

Photo of 5 degree RCI slider. These work well as a step for my wife and parents. I step over them.

@Cowboy59, I had the Predator steps also when I bought my OR. The first page of my 'build' thread chronicles the comparison of those to the RSG flat sliders, no rear kick-out, with the grip top plate, that I installed. You can see the photos on page 1 that may give you an idea, at least of the flat version, how far they stick out. The angled stick out less, of course. Just a point of reference.

Here is a picture showing the height difference from the angled slider to the door sill, and a picture showing how much the slider sticks out beyond the door sill. Hopefully this is helpful.

Maybe @glwood54 or another member with flat sliders would be willing to take the same measurements on theirs to give you a real comparison.

I would guess that the flat slider would be better as a step, and the angled slider might be a little easier to step over.

@glwood54 - Thank you for those pics, as they were most helpful! I will be making a decision today. I am wrestling with top plate or no top plate, if I go with the angled ones. Seems as though, other than looks, there is no real added step surface if you go with the angled version.

Well gentlemen, I ordered my rock sliders from RCI. Angled sliders, no top plate and unfinished. I will be finishing them myself. I essentially got free shipping with the BLACKFRIDAY2020 code. I will be sure to post my finishing and install process once I receive them.

I can't seem to get a good photo of the side shot showing the step height comparison, but here's one of how far the step is out from the door edge:

I was crouching down in the drainage ditch. :D Otherwise, I would have had to practically lay down to get the right angle.

    Thank you!

You're welcome. That was the issue - if I got low enough to match your angle, I'd be on the ground and couldn't see the shot I was taking...oh well, suffice it to say it's a bit lower than your photo...

I have the angled ones with top plate, I thought maybe it would help to deflect debris being thrown up. It does seem to help.

Good point. Whether using top plate for stepping or not, it helps keep road debris from being kicked up into the rocker panel.

Looks like OP ordered his sliders already, but for anyone searching this thread in the future wondering how well the RCI 5 deg sliders with top plate serve as a step, here are a few pictures with my size 10.5 foot for reference. The rear kickout is really the only part that, IMO, functions adequately as a step. The front can somewhat, but you have to position your foot parallel to the slider and it’s nowhere near as stable of a stepping surface as the rear.

Flash News Update - After discussing with my wife and verifying she likes the step on our F250 truck, contacted RCI and modified my order to 5 degree slider with top plate. Since I added the top plate, I am having them powder coated, as I don't want to hassle with hand spraying the top plate. RCI was quick to adjust my order. They are great to deal with.

I don't have a 10.5, but even so, that seems like plenty of step surface to me...

I wish there is no holes on sliders. Even though I got mud flaps I get rocks chips and all the crap ejected from tires hitting the body though those holes.

I have the RCI sliders with the plate. But not angled. They are great quality and are holding up well. See my build thread for photos.
