Yeah, that's quite a dive from average...Maybe you got stale gas at the pump?

I have 2067 miles on my new 2016 trail I bought exactly a month ago. That display will not move off of 16.9 ave. I did put fallen wild peaks on there with 200 miles on it, and we still have ethanol in our gas, so i'm hoping it goes up soon.

What are those with a 3in lift and big tires are getting mpg wise? I wanna know if 14-16mpg is normal.

2016 T4R 7K miles . when new I got 16-17 MPG. around town driving now same use 18.1 MPG over a month with cool 40-50 F temps.

when I did drive on hywy on my trip to warmer regions I did get 20 MPG . never got 21 plus MPG. 70 MPH.. 87 octane ..

from my research into this MPG it appears the ethanol % is variable . so the more ethanol the lower the MPG. If no ethanol I would expect over 20 MPG.

owners of E85 vehicles have scan tools that can measure the ethanol % and they have reported this fact...

Hit 22.22 mpg on a road trip this past Monday. Included going over mount hood here in Oregon, I was pretty impressed. Oddly computer said 16.7mpg but hand calculated it was a legit 22.22. Even better then my 3rd gen Tacoma I traded for my 17 T4R.

We have a 2016 and a 2017 SR5 4x2. My wife drives the silver with the Dueler HT stocks and gets 17.3 since she's had it. I drive the white 2017 with BFG KO2 and SEMA rims and I get 20.3. We both get gas at the same place and tend to drive about the same routes all the time. Both tire pressures were set using the chalk method. The main difference is she tends to use the brakes a lot more than I do.

I tend to believe gas mileage has more to do with how you use your brakes than how you use your gas pedal.

Are you guys actually calculating your mileage when you fill up, or are you letting the computer do it for you?

If it's the latter, you're likely over-estimating by at least an mpg or 2. The MPG on the computer is just based on a calculation and makes a bunch of assumptions. It's usually a bit high.

To *actually* calculate your mileage, do it on your next fill-up and divide by your trip-meter.

Also... Octane: The only time you *might* see a benefit to running higher octane is if you've got a lead foot or are towing something ("extreme driving conditions"), and that just defeats the purpose of maximizing your mileage anyway. Under normal driving conditions, you likely won't see any difference.

Maybe the new Toyotas are more accurate (have yet to actually do a direct comparison on my 2017 - only put one full tank thru it so far), but my 2014 Corolla, and the OBDII on my 2004 Taco are almost always a couple mpg off. I've heard this from others as well.

Fwiw, I just calculated 19.0 on my fillup coming home from work today, and my computer was telling me 18.6, so go figure... mine's brand new and not fully broken in yet (400 miles), so who knows...

2014 Trail Premium with 35K miles.

    Around town driving: 16mpg.
Highway driving 65mph and under: 20mpg.
Highway driving 65mph and over: 17-18mpg. (Speed limits on some highways in TX are 85)

    2 noticeable factors.
    1. Gasoline with ethanol decreases fuel efficiency by almost 10%, and the engine runs a just a bit hotter.
    2. When the outside temp is a 100F or hotter, take another 10% off the fuel economy.

There are a huge number of variables impacting mileage - Here are a couple that come to mind -
=> Terrain. I live in Western Washington where we have a lot of elevation changes...You never make up going down hill for what you lost going up..Flat-Landers will always report higher mileage. 2) Elevation - Every vehicle I've owned gets better mileage when you are above 5000 feet. 3)Idling and slow speeds will consume a lot of fuel (My 2016 Taco has a ton of instrumentation that demonstrates that) 4) Tires - I run AT's during the summer and MT's during the winter (because I drive to mountain tops for work all the time) the MT's will cost me 1-2 mpg just to run them...even on pavement 5)How you drive - If you drive like there is an egg on the gas pedal, your mileage will increase. 6) Speed. If I drive on the freeway and stay under 60 mph I will pretty much get over 23 mpg (I have a Manual Transmission) If I drive 70, that will drop 1 to 2 mpg. From what I am reading the Taco will be a little better mileage than the 4R. Perhaps not enough to justify putting the 3.5 in the 4R however. More ratios in the 4R Trans. is a technique that all the automakers are using...Witness the number of 8-10 speed automatics on the market. Perhaps the best improved to the 4R would be to leave the engine alone and update the transmission?

I would certainly hope the taco gets better mileage with the otto/Atkinson voodoo that the motor does, well that and it weighs like 400 pounds less. When Toyota announced that engine I was really hoping to see it in the mid 20's for MPG, maybe as they change the tune on them they can squeeze a bit more. As far as updating the tranny I'm all for it as long as it doesn't end up just continually hunting gears. I shudder at the thought of the current 3.5 without a turbo in the 4runner...

The hunting for gears is all based on the desire to have a computer change ratios while looking for the lowest fuel flow. Remember that the CAFE standards are driving a lot of this. My 2010 Taco had the 4-banger...The change to the 3.5 was a significant improvement - much more power and better mileage...(a Win-Win) We need to all understand that the Feds are driving a lot of these changes. To say that I'm pleased with my decision to stay with a manual is a huge understatement. I'd rather use my computer than theirs :). Whereas I am looking at a new 4R for later this year, you can understand why I am watching this carefully...especially when you are - forced - to buy an automatic. My wife would much prefer a manual.

Averaged 20.2 mpg during our 8-day, 2800+ mile trip. Filled with 87 octane every time.

MN -> SD -> YellowStone -> Grand Teton -> Jackson Hole...and back the reverse route.

I'm pleased about the fuel efficiency given we have 3 drivers in the family. Living in MN w/c is very flat, we all had to learn how to prepare for inclines and how to maintain the rpm to prevent aggressive downshifts. Staying within the 1800-2400 rpm when climbing seem to be most efficient.

I also got those low MPG # on my 2016 ... after a few K miles it does improve .. after I did my first oil change and changed the rear diff gear oil then I got up to the 18.5-20 MPG range...

used mobil synthetic gear oil 80-90wt in the rear diff... smoother ..diff oil was nasty dark ...

I changed at 3K miles engine oil and the diff gear oil rear. reason is I was going to the warmer regions in january 2017.. so I did this the end of dec 2016 before the 4K mile trip.

engine oil @3k miles was perfect when changed . checked oil 2 days ago exactly on the full mark clean as new with a little over 5K miles on the engine oil..

it is weird on these toyota vehicles the rear diff oil needs more changing than the engine oil !!!..

but the oil changing did help on MPG...

Yeah, it seems like my 4R also gets better gas mileage on hwy stop n' go traffic vs 45Mph roads with a lot of stop lights and stop signs...probably because Of how I accelerate berween the 2 scenarios.

I avg about 17.3 according to the factory computer. I have a 30 mile commute to work but only about 20 miles of it is actual highway...and at 75-77mph.
