I was hoping to have a rack installed in the next month for summertime gear hauling and am leaning toward Gobi, but they're 3 months out, which negates my plan for the summer.

Did your Gobi rack really take 3 months to arrive? Do other racks take the same amount of time?

    Thanks.

I plan on getting one, but everything I also read seems like a long lead time required.

It's worth the wait guys. You won't be sorry. Not to be mean, however I saw a TRDP today with a baja rack and you could definitely see the quality difference.

    That is mean. Kidding.

I ordered my Baja rack and received it in less than a week. (Shipped from California, near border with Tijuana, to Virginia). I paid $1,054 total, with shipping.

I believe a Gobi is over $1,500, so basically 50% more expensive....but maybe that is worth it to some.

I am curious, what quality differences did you notice?

Do you have to drill for a baja rack? And also, do they have the backbone set up for 5th gen 4runners yet?

Cool. And just realized, the backbone system is rhino racks.

Gobi is made in Colorado, Baja is made in Mexico. I believe Gobi is the only company that submerges every rack to check the welds. The material, the powder coat process is second to none. There is a reason it cost more than others and its all in the material and design. Lower profile, multiple attachments, can handle loads of over 300lbs. If you get a chance to look at a 5 year old Gobi and a 5 year old Baja. You will understand.

No drilling required on the Baja and I am not sure what a backbone set up is. I am sure their website will clarify.

Regarding the Baja being made in Mexico, I believe the 2011 Toyota Tacoma I used to own was also made in Mexico and that was a pretty good product. You probably have more money than me and don't mind paying the additional 50% for the Gobi, that's cool, I get it.

But you were able to see the quality differences or maybe just the design differences?

We also have a 2016 TRDP Tundra that was made in San Antiono with some parts from other areas and you can tell the difference in the materials and craftsmanship. Don't get me wrong, love the truck it's just different. Baja is a good company and from what I've read on other forums they have outstanding customer service.

Since our vehicles spend a great deal of time outside, the elements tend to age the products we buy. Really did not want to spend the extra $$$ but have loved long enough to realize "you get what you pay for". I think if you could feel both at the same time this would answer both of your questions.

Most of the time, that is true (You get what you pay for) but sometimes it's not. I've never owned a BMW, but they are expensive and everyone that I know that's owned one said it's unreliable and expensive to maintain.

I've never seen a Gobi rack so I am not insinuating anything about their rack. It might be better and last longer than the Baja and well worth the price, you may be right. It's all good. Thanks for the info.

Be careful going through car wash if you own a rack that doesn't bolt down in the front...

Wow. Good Point Brochaco. I honesty did not consider that....and I almost actually took my truck through a drive through car wash last week. I owe you $4k. Thanks.

Maybe the Gobi is worth the extra $500 if it can be secured down in front.

Gobi's are the same as Baja, no bolts on the front. This is why I will going with Prinsu when I finally pull the trigger. While I like the idea of not having drill in the front, that story scared me out of Gobi and Baja.

I just looked at the Prinsu and the install instructions. It is sleek and surely quieter than the Baja I have but I like the basket configuration of the Baja, it just seems more like it will hold things better and, this is just me, if there is a way to botch an install job, I will find it. So the drilling would scare me. I will either drill slightly off center or too for forward or back, or drill it out too big. or press down and drill through the headliner. Again, just me and my ability to botch something. I am sure most guys that can work a wrench could do the job without messing up. Anyways, of course, post some pics once the Prinsu is installed. Again, it's nice looking and I am sure quieter than the Baja.

Be careful when you drill the front bolt area. If you get leaks from this area your headliner will be ruined and the value of your rig will be diminished. You are better off with the Baja or Gobi and only hand wash your rig.
