I never was a huge fan of the trd shift knob so I was happy to see the fj cruiser shift knob fits and it matches the 4wd shift lever perfectly. Paid about $75 from my local stealership. Mine went on without issues but some guys will either run a metric screw set spacer or trim the bottom to keep it from rubbing when you put it in park but like I said no issues for me

I installed the same knob. It fits the interior so much better than the TRD knob in my opinion.

I agree with you, it looks better than the oem TRD shifter, and I also ran with this combination for a while. I trimmed the middle section a bit to shorten the knob, though:

I ultimately chose the Ellis Precision, however. I did find someone on the forum who was more than willing to take the FJ handle off my hands!

    I like your choice, though.

I feel like there's some gear position where the uncut knob will cause an issue, can't recall exactly what now, but I recall when I did mine I ended up cutting the middle down slightly for some reason and I'm sure I would have tried to fit it without cutting first. OP, you ran through all the possible gear positions including S + and - to verify function?

But yeah it's a good mod.

    For some - when you shift out of PARK, the bottom of the shift knob hits the trim bezel. It did with mine at least. Here's how I remedied that;

I too never cared much for the standard 4R shift knob. Might look OK on the Limited (?) With my 2010 FJ I went with that billet look aluminum handle set. Thought it looked good on the FJ back then. Would not look good on a 4R today. But those stock FJ shift knobs above do in fact look good. Much better than the stock TRD. On my 4R I went with the Ellis knobs also. Added a touch of red to the gear selector knob just for grins.

Saw a video on YT where a guy changed out his shifter to the new Tacoma TRD PRO shifter, along with custom shift boot. It looked really nice. Wish I can find the video again.

Where do you put the screw set in?

Inside the shift knob. It acts like a spacer giving you enough space to clear the trim bezel. Note that some may have this issue and some don't so would be best to check before buying the set screw.

So you just drop in the screw set? Or does it need to be secured in the shift knob somehow? Sorry for the stupid question

No worries! Yes you just thread it into the threaded part of the shift knob. It just prevents the shifter shaft from threading all the way to the top of the inside of the shift knob - thus giving you enough clearance so you don't hit the trim (if that is an issue for you).

Your top two photos… is it just the lighting that makes them look different colors?

Yes. They really are black on the grip part, it just doesn't look that way until the handle is out in the sun.

Ok I wanted to update and a huge thanks to @Emmantik without any modification it looked like mine cleared by 1mm but I noticed when I shifted from park to drive it looked like it could possibly rub so I bought the metric screw set m8x1.25x6mm

I took the fj cruiser shift knob apart (you just pull it apart in the middle) and used a number 4 Allen key to screw in the screw set on the top of the shift knob. Popped the knob together and screwed it back on. Super easy and I can let my ocd rest knowing it has enough clearance for sure now

So basically, the set screw is the same diameter as the threads on the shift stick… and you screw it in all the way and that keeps the new knob from screwing all the way down?

I see two different shift knobs from the FJ. One with the silver components that they refer to as "metal". Is it actually metal or just silver plastic like on the stock 4Runner's transfer case knob? Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for the fast reply. I figured it was plastic but had to confirm since they described it as metal! Glad I asked.
Had no idea that the all black one is from the Trail Teams. Thats cool. Thanks again!

Gotcha. No no, not worried about looking cheap at all. I like the stock transfer case knob. I didn't know if I went with the all black shift knob if the "dark grey" coloring would be off from the transfer knob so I was thinking about just replacing both. And if the top of the shifter was metal I don't know if I would want that or not considering I'd be feeling it constantly. Basically, it was a question of matching or not.

Thanks for the numbers. I am going to get the all back combo and not risk it not matching. I'll let you know if it sucks or not. All black can be killer or really cheap looking. Fingers crossed its stealth and cool. I thought it was from the base base model FJ.

Is your transfer case knob a bit loose? Making mine tight has it completely misaligned.

Maybe it’s the lighting but are they drk grey?

Also does the FJ shift knob ‘feel’ better than the stock knob?
