I have a 1997 4r 4wd auto with 200k miles. The rack and pinion is leaking. I think I'll replace it. Anyone have good results with aftermarket ones? Or do I need to bite the bullet and buy new OEM?

    Just go OEM.

It'll come with tie rods as well, inners that is.

Get yourself some Tacoma tie rod ends and Tacoma OEM lower ball joints.

OEM. Aftermarket ones are prone to leaking.

Has anyone out there tried to rebuild one of these? Or is it just asking for trouble?

I looked into it. By the time you buy all the boots and the rebuild kit from Toyota and new inner tie rods and whatever else..I think it was like $100 more for a whole new unit.

    Not worth it.

I got mine on discount from mcGeorge Toyota online parts.

I rebuilt the 98 tacoma it lasted about 30 k and outer o ring failed. Not worth the risk. I replaced with oem. It does come with all you need. Make sure you replace bushings since they seem to die about 200k
