My 4Runner was involved in an accident roughly a month ago, all the body panels have been replaced that were effed up and now I'm left with a new problem. When parting out another 4Runner at a junkyard, I was told it was a 2000 4Runner so I thought I could pull the air filter box off of it (mine was smashed in the crash). I didn't know Toyota changed the design of the MAF sensors after July of 98', but it uses the same connector so I thought that they were compatible. I'm not sure if they are compatible or if my sensor is broken. I have verified that the sensor is the issue though. I'd prefer to not have to buy another assembly even despite the possible performance decline with the older design of MAF sensor. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Go to an online TOYOTA dealer or partsouq.com and look for your MAF part number.

    I think it should be:
    22204-21010

TOYOTA says it works for 1999 to 2008 or so for all 4Runners with a 3.4.

A 1999 car would usually be built from August\September 1998 to July\August 1999. So you should be ok as that July '98 changeover should have been before your car was built.

I am a little confused by your dates. Did you get parts off a 2000 or a 98?

And what engine do you have?

Partsouq will give you the exact part numbers you need, great reference. Just enter your vin.

Why source parts at a junkyard if you can get insurance to cover it all?

Most people don't run collision on older cars (especially younger drivers). He may have been at fault or partially at fault and has to fix the car himself.

Should've clarified: the car I pulled the MAF sensor off of must have been a 98 but I was told by the clerk it was a 2000 so i made the assumption everything on that 4Runner would be compatible with my 99. My insurance won't cover my car, only the other car involved. My dad was the one who crashed my car (thanks a lot btw) so I mean he's the one paying for all the repairs so it's no big deal.

update: discovered the sensors are NOT interchangeable, despite being able to fit as well as plug in like the newer designed one. so i guess i gotta go out and either get a cold air intake or try to find another air box with the correct sensor.

OK, so I'm a little confused...

Currently, You have a '98 air box and MAF, right?

You say the MAFs are interchangeable physically...so have you put in a newer OEM '99+ MAF in the older box?

I did look up the part number for the air cleaner and yes, it is only for 1999-2002. So maybe if the newer MAF won't fit, you will need a new one.

I have used this site extensively for finding local parts from junkyards:

I meant the boxes themselves (everything as a whole) fits into the 99+ even though it was intentionally designed for the 96-98 models. I need to change out the one i bought from the junkyard with a box that was designed for the 99+ because the old sensor design sucks ass and doesn't work with anything past 98.
