So my 99 4Runner 2.7l base isn’t cranking or starting. Originally, I was driving down the road and it just cut off on me and wouldn’t start after that. Had it towed home. It would crank after that, but no start. Thought it had something to do with the starter, so took that off and got a new one, now it’s not cranking and I’m throwing a PO335 and PO340.

New starter is getting power when attempting to crank, the engine is turning over by hand, figure it might be something to do with the ignition switch, but between that and the codes, I’m kind of at a loss on next steps. Would definitely appreciate some guidance :D

Previous starter turned, but replacement doesn't? I'd start there - you need that before anything else. Maybe you got a defective starter or missed something on the installation. Check the fuse first. Next, reconnect the old one and see if it turns. Keep in mind the original problem is that the truck died in the middle of driving. A failed starter won't cause that problem.

Codes indicate crankshaft and camshaft sensors, which may simply be due to the fact it's not cranking, since they showed up after the starter replacement. Could also be a timing chain break. Not familiar with that engine but there may be a cover you can remove to view the chain.

    Could be a fuel problem.

Will double-check after work and let you know the results.

funny enough is that the new starter DID crank multiple times after installation. Thought it was a fuel issue, so went to listen for the fuel pump and asked gf to turn the key for me. She didn’t even get to crank it before it just stopped working, despite the fact that I had cranked it just thirty seconds earlier.

Parts store starters are trash. Replace it with your old one or one from a junkyard TOYOTA or a new TOYOTA one.

Lol. Sorry...Anyways, a full stop\shutdown like that while running is going to be a few suspicious actors:

Fuel Pump. Maybe a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pressure regulator.
Timing is off. Belt\chain broke...crank or cam sensor went tits up. ECU has no idea when to spray and spark so it shuts things down.
ECU dropped dead. Probably the least possible on a TOYOTA.

First thing...get it cranking again and go from there.

LOL no worries- previous owner let little brother borrow it and little bro took it mudding without the shield on the bottom. There’s still mud caked over everything, and the starter is no exception. Feels like I eat dirt every time I touch any surface underneath the car lol.

I’m fairly new to DIY mechanics, so decided to put a new starter on because it was having issues starting when hot (haha ). Been reading up on that and saw some people say to clean fuel injectors, some said change starter, and when this happened decided to try new starter just in case.

But, tested the starter relay and that’s got continuity when energized. Tested the solenoid when cranking and that’s getting powered. Still got to clean the old one and find the time to pop it back on, but definitely won’t be right now. Will update once I get to that stage.

Okay, so update: put the old starter in and it started cranking, so 100% user error on that and thank you for suggesting. Codes are gone too. However still facing the no start issue, so back to square 1ish.

will check the fuel pump and filter tomorrow or when I get additional time and will continue to update when I find the issue.

Well timing or fuel are probably the two top contenders.

I'd do a fuel pressure test on the fuel rail. No fuel...no go.

If fuel pressure is good, you'll need to look up how best to troubleshoot timing.

When was the belt changed last? It didn't maybe break did it?

Since the codes went away after the starter was changed, I'm thinking the ECU is fine.

Not sure if a bad MAF would cause a no start. I think you would get codes though.

Most anything else if it was wrong, it would try to start but run poorly.
