A mouse got in my Tundra on an extended camping trip last fall. Luckily it just chewed on my cabin air filter & ruined my windshield fluid line. I’m definitely investing in some peppermint spray soon…

Sorry to hear this. Do you live in a rural or suburban type area? Curious for the chance of this happening.

Thanks for asking I live in a suburb-subdivision for the last 7yrs . Unreal. Update is they chewed the injector wire and nothing further so I dodged that bullet. Now the question is stopping them from going at it again. The service advisor lives rurally and swears by bounce dryer sheets in each corner of the engine bay. The other thing they did for me that I’ve read about is they wrapped a bunch of my wires with “HONDA” ant-rodent tape. I’m going to buy more of it and wrap whatever else I can. On we go fighting the good fight

Is your 4R in the garage also? I use bounce dry sheets in my boat knock on wood for a long time with no issues. A ton of them. Maybe I should keep some in the garage too.

You know one more thought is I added a rubber strip about one inch high on concrete where rubber seal of door meets. I had water coming in garage.
It’s just a guess but I wonder if that tighter seal helps keep the mice out. It was only $200 installed. I would think with concrete rat wall and this added seal on concrete where door meets could only help.

I never had an issue like this with any car either. I am taking some bounce out there now for added protection

I had cardboard from my old leaky Explorer so I tucked bounce underneath engine compartment now 140 sheets and getting more. Hopefully this is good proteciton

    bone stock for now

A few years ago they had a bad problem out at the Denver International Airport with rabbits and other rodents eating the wires on truck/cars in the long term parking. The wires were in fact covered in a soy based products and those little critters loved the taste of the wires. If you Google " Denver Airport rabbits " you will be shocked.

I wonder if they dislike the smell of fluid film on the underbody as well?

I put some poison down in the garage tonight in addition to the bounce sheets.

This new 4R is high maintenance already :). Fluid flown frame, prevent mice invasion, PPF on front end :)

@OP in all seriousness I hope they got your issue resolved somewhat economically. That would just suck and I feel for you bud.

@mac1usa I appreciate it man. Just under $500 bucks later my runner is back in my driveway. Service advisor dude told me they have a 2022 Sienna in the shop for same thing bloody rodents chewed the engine harness. Their bill is 6k and counting been in the shop for 2 months and they can’t get the harness from Toyota and have no idea when. He figured in the end might be 8-9k damage. Gimme a break man that’s just garbage. I will mention it again….go look up and buy HONDA anti rat tape….Honda sells it to wrap wires and my dealer had it and wrapped some of my wires for me. It’s impregnated with Capsaicin.

Im going to buy a roll and wrap what I can and utilize the bounce dryer sheets in each corner of my engine bay.

what else can we do? Appreciate everyone’s support here.

    Jeff

I wonder what that Honda rodent tape is about. I remember a few years back an old girlfriend had her Accord wires eaten an apartment complex and barely made it to dealer. The odd thing was she parked near a dumpster. You would think those critters would have liked the trash over the wires

ahh just saw your post on that tape Jeff. Thanks!

I can see putting bounce in the engine bay when storing for a long time but that would be a pain to move each morning if you drive it regularly.

My whole garage this morning smells fresh from bounce. I’d rather smell that than have a big issue.

That tape doesn't work. Engine cover off, Grandpa Gus and wash the engine periodically is what I do. I've heard the peppermint oil doesn't always work but I'm just going to keep using it. My GTO gets the pouches and oil when it sits.

Glad you got your truck back on the road.

I've thankfully never had them eat my wires but I do always keep a poison blocks in each corner of my garage. In early fall and winter I see chunks bitten out of them but no droppings anywhere else but near the blocks. I think it makes them thirsty and they leave the garage to go die somewhere.

Been battling the rats (and wining for 12 months).
Noticed evidence early on and expelled them.
    Vigilance is key.
Thought about the tape, but would rather keep rodents out of engine bay altogether. I see rats all over our property. No evidence in the engine bay after 12 months of doing what I detail in the video.
Check out my video below that details my thoughts on preventing rodents, and what I am doing.

p.s. The rodents keep hitting my neighbor's car, so the rodents leaving me alone is not just coincidence.

I’ve heard it said the chewing is much more to do with rodents needing to gnaw on hard things, and that they are not actually eating anything when chewing in wires and the corrugated wiring protection tubes. If they dont constantly gnaw on hard things, their teeth get too long.

I’m hoping that the woolwax bath I gave my 4runner keeps mice having to decide between getting dirty greasy fur, or just finding something else to chew on. If I were a rat, I’d be disgusted just by looking at my frame and would take a hard pass on crawling all over that to get to some ordinary plastic and cooper wiring in the engine bay
