Hey Runner fans! I just popped in my Runner fired her up and with 6000Kms on the clock she immediately was running rough and the dash lit up ! What would you think that would be ? Bad coil pack O2 sensor or what ? She was running great until I parked her yesterday! I turned it off …waited and tied again and same thing. Here are some pics of the dash

You have a code scanner? I'd start there.

Not enough info. Assumption is that you have only driven the truck on pavement in good conditions. Did you drive in adverse conditions recently? Off road? Do you park in a location with rodents nearby that might have chewed wires? Highly unlikely that the truck is at fault, but anything is possible.

Well it’s got a P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected. I guess I will have it towed to the dealer ? I wouldn’t want to do any damage by driving it. What y’all think ?

Check and make sure all cables are tight and nothing came loose under the hood of the 4Runner. Some basic due diligence I believe is warranted. (eg: check cables going to cylinder 2. If one is loose or something else seems off then give it a try).

I appreciate that. I will give that a shot and ensure all is as it should be in the am. If it’s a no go she’s getting a tow. Damn it ! Lol

Most likely rodent damage. Look under the intake manifold.

Damn I hope it’s not rodents that’s complete BS. How the hell are we to stop that? If it’s chewed wires is that expensive ?

Sorry, didn't mean to alarm you. I had the same symptoms, here's my experience:

Last year rodents chewed one of my injector wires, I had it repaired through insurance. The cost was a few hundred for the deductable. To fix the issue, the dealer tech just cut back the chewed section of the single damaged wire. Then soldered in a patch piece of wire, and then insulated it. Definately doable at home.

2 months later, a friend of mine had the same issue with his 5th gen 4r. Sure enough, injector wire was chewed up. He fixed it himself.

    Rodent damage is my guess.

Or you power-washed the engine bay and didn’t tell us. Nah, that would probably only affect cylinder 6. I mean, that’s just what I’ve heard…from other people.

Insurance will cover it. Mine cost $9K because the truck was less than 2 years old and Toyota's rule is to replace that new, not repair. I have since removed the engine cover and I periodically spray Grandpa Gus's peppermint oil every now and then.

Does Toyota use flavored wires or something? I've never once had a rodent do any damage to any of the vehicles I've owned, but I read about it happening to 4Runners once a week it seems. You all have me paranoid!

@GtownRunner any updates? Did you inspect for rodent damage?

Rodents have been chewing wires since wire was invented.

    Nothing new.

The theory that soy-based wiring attracts rodents is a myth.

I thought it was a logical theory. But, I do realize that rodents have been at it forever. It just seems worse with newer vehicles. Is it more about the overall engine layout?

Thanks guys for all the input. I took the cover off last night and didn’t notice but may have missed it. I’m waiting for a tow truck at the moment. The dealer is about 1km from my house lol. Like someone else said I’ve never had a rodent chew any of my cars trucks nothing. Live in a subdivision and of course there are mice and such around but I certainly hope nothing is chewed. Regardless I’m going to put some peppermint oil around the engine bay going forward to be sure!! Will update ASAP there is a a chance they look at it today hopefully!

    stay tuned

Do you think taking the engine cover off helps at all? So it’s not “cozy” for them etc? I dunno

I discovered a rodent-chewed wire with only 300 miles on the odometer 2 weeks after buying my 4R in 2019. I was on a trip from Albuquerque to Durango, about halfway there when my truck got the same symptoms you have. Odd thing, though, after I pulled off the road, turned off the vehicle, and waited a bit, it started right back up and was fine. We continued our trip to Durango where I dropped it off at the Toyota dealership. The tech there is the one who found and fixed the chewed wire. I'm fortunate the 4R worked long enough for me to reach the dealership.

I'm convinced mine had the wire chewed during the transit from Japan to the dealer where I got it. It just took a couple of weeks to manifest the problem.

If it's just one wire, it's an easy fix.

Well my worst nightmare …yep rodents chewed the injector wire and now they are taking off the intake manifold to see if there is any further damage and if so he’s told me to “call my insurance” what a disaster I’m really really angry right now. This has never ever happened in any vehicle I’ve had. Luck of the draw and I got the short straw this time . $400 so far …man I got the blues
