After 5-yrs and 60k-miles of driving a Tacoma and pointing out every 4Runner that I drove by, I finally pulled the trigger and made the trade.

Considering the wild variation in pricing and incredibly high trade in value of used vehicles, I'm very happy with my new-to-me Calvary Blue TD-Pro 4Runner.

Congratulations, my 4R is my first Toyota and really strongly looked at the Tacoma first more so for more towing capacity which I really did not need. I remember one sales person telling me if you want the crown jewel get the 4Runner as he had one with 300k.

I just like the SUV much better than a bed of truck but I guess it depends on our needs.

Just curious, how'd ya like the Taco? I'm a die hard 4Runner guy but thinking about maybe getting a used Tacoma to share with the kids. Just wondering if they're as reliable as the ol Runner

I came from a 2nd gen Tacoma (2013) that was trouble free for all the years I had it. I also currently have a 2003 that is still going strong after 19 years. I’d avoid the 3rd gen Tacoma, but that’s just me.

Welcome!! I couldn’t sell my 2.5 Gen taco. So I have both now!! If you’re going to get a 4Runner might as well be a special color!! I just bought a 2015 inferno. Yours looks great!!!

If you get one make sure you get the 4.0. I recommend 2013-2015 taco. Do not buy a 2012 - they have problems with it going into limp mode cause secondary air pump. If you like the 3rd Gen tacos then you have lots of options

Welcome. While my 2.5 gen Tundra has served me well with zero issues over 5 years, the transition to a 4Runner has proven a great decision. My wife couldn’t stand driving my Tundra & now has a 4Runner on the way after driving mine…they are indeed a unique driving experience along with great reliability & resale value down the road. Good decision on your part & hope you enjoy your new ride.

The Tacoma (2017, access cab, MT) was flawless except for one issue - there was a slight howl from the rear end at very specific speeds (I think it was like 54mph to 58mph, or something like that). It had about 10k miles on it when I brought it for an oil change and mentioned it. They said it was wind noise from a hole in the frame. They said they had a plastic plug for it and it should be good.

I took in back in after a week and said, nope. They said ok, and replaced the entire gear set and bearings. That mostly solved the problem, and I stopped worrying about it.

Other than that I would say that if you are looking at a Tacoma, then you owe it to yourself to try the manual transmission. They are very different vehicles in how they drive. And if I had the option of MT in the 4Runner I would have jumped on it.

1st day with the steel rims - going for that UN Peace Keeper look.

Same here. I'm literally on day-five with it and already I can say the 4Runner...
    - is more comfortable, especially the seats
    - is quieter on the highway and even around town
    - has a nicer ride (didn't expect that)
    - has better airflow with the windows open (just drop the hatch glass about halfway and all the turbulence in the front windows disappears)
    - better view for the wife with the height adjustable seats.
    - much larger tank with a great range

The only downside so far is the smaller navigation screen.

I'd agree with all of those BUT the larger tank and range. My 2016 tacoma had a range of 410miles when full, my 2020 4runner the range is 350

But Welcome! I love the calvary blue! Great choice

    410 miles? Really?

I could swear my truck had an 18 gallon tank?

The 4Runner looks to have a 23 gallon tank?

Edit to add = yeah that was the color that I really wanted.

I agree. My Taco was always around 360-380. And I am a Lightfoot. I'm the one you shake your first at for making you miss the green light cuz I took off so slow. Lol.

I honestly didn't expect the smoother ride either. Big and drives like our CRV.

Haven't had the windows down yet. But had to be better than that little ass rear window of the Taco.

I still have my 2nd Gen Tacoma - 2015 AC 2WD TRD Sport with the 4.0 engine and auto trans. I am at almost 105k on the mileage, and it has been perfect. Overall, it has been a great truck that has been well maintained. My largest gripe is the kazoo noise from the driver's window in certain windy conditions.

The Tacoma has a 21.1 gallon tank. The 4Runner has a 23 gallon tank.

Range will depend on driving habits and environmental conditions (obviously). But, if you go by capacity and average fuel economy (sourced from fuelly.com), the 4Runner has better range.

I get it, just was saying the best my 4r gets is less then my tacoma, same wheel and tires to. And I baby my 4r, when I used to drive my tacoma hard, after intake, exhaust and ov tune, my 16yr old self came out.

But op, I'm liking the white steelies on your old taco. Hell those would look hawt on your calvary 4r

Another recent Taco to 4Runner guy here. Mine was an 09 2nd Gen that I had for 7 faithful years and just under 300K km's. I was worried about resale going down fast after 300K or I would've kept it, it was long paid for and still ran like a top. With costs of everything and interest rates going up I figured it was the right time to buy. I couldn't get a premium Taco anymore so the 4Runner was an easy second choice. I only didn't originally pick the 4Runner as I was unsure of life without a truck but 1.5months in and zero regrets, I'm actually more happy now I went 4Runner rather than Tacoma.

Welcome to the 4runner side of the Toyota world. Gonna be interesting to see what you like better. We have a running joke between our group about who made the better choice in vehicle, we have 2 Tacomas and 2 4runners. So far the 4runners are winning the debate (mostly because they are the 2 that are running at the moment, the Tacomas are procrastinating on their truck wrenching). Hope you have fun with your new ride!
