    Hello 4 runner fans

during a windshield replacement safelite cut the metal underneath the windshield that supports the cowl. The body shop folks say this will not hold, be more apt to rust, and cause leaking issues. Anyone have this repair done on your 4 runner. It’s a 2020 limited.

Did you watch them cut that out? How did you know? I am sailing they did not keep you in the “lobby” while working on it.

I hope you get this resolved in your favor. Does not seem right at all

I am not sure I understand what you mean when you say 'repair'? Your post says you had your windshield replaced and safelite cut metal out from the cowl area but that is in no way considered a repair in my book. What would they have been repairing in the first place other than a basic windshield replacement?

They cut the metal. Had to get it welded and guy at body shop said it would rust and not hood and leak water.

So did the shop that welded it say what would have to be done to rectify the problem? I cant think of anything that would fix that properly, that is just unacceptable in my mind.

Years ago I had Safelite replace a windshield on one of my vehicles. Several years later I noticed rust and bubbling under the paint on one of the edges. After providing my original invoice/warranty and a series of phone calls they agreed to the repair.

The installer had used a utility knife to cut through the weatherstripping and scratched through the paint to bare metal, which rusted over time.

I don't recall what the repair cost was but it was somewhere in the range of $2k. Took it to the body shop of my choice where they pulled the windshield, repaired the damage, repainted the roof, and reinstalled the windshield.

    Good luck.

Why would that even need to be messed with for a windshield?

Some ape was using a reciprocating saw instead of proper glass tools to remove original glass I assume...

Yeah that piece looks like it’s stamped like that from the factory. To weld it back seems like a hack job to me.

I would not accept that at all. I tell them buy me out or I would get a lawyer.

I believe this is the second time Safelite has done this to a 4Runner. I can't remember where I saw it posted though.

I scheduled for Safelite to come to my house to replace my windshield a few months back. The dude never showed. No communication from Safelite either. Called thier customer service and was told "oh, he couldn't finish his route. Would you like to reschedule?" Hell no! I'm not wasting my $$ on idiots. And after seeing this thread, I am thankful he didn't show.

P.S. My windshield is still cracked :p

What changed in these pictures (besides the cheap spray paint job)? I cant really tell what is being shown.

Did they tell you what they “cut” and more importantly, why? Was it “cut out”, or cut into/scratched (on purpose, or accident)? If it was on purpose, do they explain this before just tearing into it? Seems very weird.

Also what will not hold? Did body shop mean something wont hold structurally? or did they mean the paint wont hold? I guess I cant tell what happened here without some more info.

LOL at the guys saying new 4R.

They should pay for a real shop to fix and free windshield while they are at it.

Another Safelite horror story. Read the online reviews. It’s best to hire a reliable independent windshield glass installer.

Based on that pic, I wouldn't trust the repair not to rust down the road either. And I'd hate to see the underside of the repair. I'd contact a lawyer and have some serious conversations with Safelite about their liability down the road when the repair fails.

I needed my windshield replaced and had an appt with Safelite (was steered that direction by insurance company) a couple months ago. When I arrived they said the could replace the windshield but couldn’t re-calibrate the safety features because I had it leveled with larger tires. I told the guy it was never recalibrated from the factory but he wanted to debate it with me so I left. As it turns out, the extra time reminded me of a local glass company that we had worked with in the past. They used OEM glass, recalibrated the safety features and even added ceramic tint for $60 out of pocket. After seeing this thread I’m glad it didn’t work out w/ Safelite.

I don't know if I would have gotten it repaired right away. I probably would have parked it in a garage or under a tarp, and gotten a rental car while researching best options. Hard to tell from the pics what the damage involved, and what the repair was, exactly. Is the damage physically under the windshield?

I'd like to see a new 4R for a little damage like this. Don't be butt hurt because you know I'm right.

A new 4R may be a stretch but a reasonable buy out who knows.

I know this it’s like asking the hot blonde out. If you don’t ask you definitely won’t get. No harm in asking for it.

What are these installers thinking. Do they think Toyota just spent money and designed it for shizzo and giggles?

I've seen this before with windshield companies and your insurance should total the vehicle. It's not repairable and the body shop is correct. It will never hold if you expect any type of longevity out of that vehicle.

That’s why they carry liability insurance like we do (or should)
