Hey guys, im new here and looking for a bit of guidance if at all possible...

I have found a 2005 V6 4runner that has had 2 owners, some decent service records, and appears to be very clean. Runs and drives smooth. 4x4 with center locker and only 85k miles. Been a SW truck its whole life so no rust..

Only catch is the guy is asking 18k for the 4runner...

I know the market is pretty competitive right now, so im just curious if 18k is crazy, or reasonable for a clean rig with low miles?

    thanks in advance guys!

Welcome, I’d say ehh. Only 4Runner that should be fetching that price are 06-09 V8s. The market is slowing down, consumer uncertainty, high gas prices, and inflation are starting to make it known. If you can hold out a few more months I bet the price drops or you find something more reasonable. GL

2005s with around 180,000 miles are selling at 15k in my neck of the woods. I think it depends on the region. 18k for low mileage seems fairly reasonable. See if you can talk the seller down a little.

Mind if I ask what your neck of the woods is? I am in the Southwest. The truck has been for sale for a week now and still hasnt sold, so maybe I can offer him something more like 17k.

The PNW here, or more specifically near Portland/SW Washington. It never hurts to ask for a lower price. Good luck!

Just tell the guy this is the car you’ve been looking for but u were only able to save $16k so far, if he doesn’t go for it just say maybe u can borrow a little more from family and inch ur way up till he says ok. Go up in $200 increments. GL!

Ended up buying the truck for $17,500. Probably over paying a bit with the frothy market, but I am justifying the purchase with the rationale that it will probably be a really good family vehicle for a lot of years. My kids are 2 and I really want a vehicle that helps get the family outside as much as possible : )

That’s good! Ya it’s a little higher than normal but I guess this is the new normal, and the 4runner is a great vehicle and I think you’ll get your money’s worth out of it. Enjoy it and don’t look back! In the end your kids will remember the memories they have in it than how much you paid :thumbsup::D

Here she is at the house. Drove her home yesterday evening and she seems to run and drive great. The inner CV boots are both torn, so need to figure that out before I drive her too much.

Looks like you found a nice truck--congrats. I kick myself for not buying that body style with the V8 about 4 or 5 years ago.

Is there any reason that people prefer the v8? I figured the v6 got better mileage and may last longer. I drive pretty mellow around town anyhow, so the V6 has plenty of power for me on the streets.

maybe the v8 is nice to have when wheelin?

V8 and v6 get really similar gas mileage, actually. V8 just has gobs of torque real low compared to the v6 and a bit more peak horsepower where the v6 likes to be revved out more. On the downside though the v8 has a timing belt that needs to be changed every 60 or 90k, I don't remember which, and if you don't and it breaks will grenade your engine with valves hitting pistons. v6 has a basically lifetime timing chain

At the time I wanted it for more towing capacity vs the the V6. I got a new 21 ORP but several years ago I passed on a 2007 V8 model with maybe 45k miles. It was foolish on my part but oh well. It was back when I started learning about 4Rs.

I chose the V6 over the V8 for the simple fact that I wanted to have 2wd and “AWD” options as well as regular 4hi and 4lo. I never planned on doing any serious towing so the extra 2500ish lbs of towing abilities didn’t mean anything to me. From the very beginning I knew I would me nodding out my 4runner and I just felt that the V8 and it’s full time 4x4 system would be more limiting. I did way too much research when looking at getting the 4runner

Never thought about towing, that makes sense. Fortunately I wont need to tow with this truck, so hopefully the v6 will be adequate.

The inner cv boots are torn on both sides, so I need to get those repaired before I drive much. The suspension is still all factory, so no lift or anything. Will the OEM cv boots hold up for a decent amount of time if I don't have a lift? Or should I go a different route than OEM?

I know there are tons of threads and topics regarding aftermarket boots and boot stretch mods etc. but it seems like those are all geared towards rigs that have been lifted because the cv boot angle gets steeper and the ribs on the boot seem to rub even harder. Mine will probably remain stock for a while.

Nice ride! OEM ones can last the life of the vehicle. Can’t go wrong with Toyota OEM parts. Also, like the above post, I drove a truck with a torn boot for probably 30k miles before I got around to changing it. I live in a dry climate, and everything inside was still fine. Drive your new truck without worry.

I got my CV axles replaced with autozone ones at first but it seemed like the boots would tear once a year, they had the lifetime warranty so it would be free to replace but it was a hassle to have to do it… then I got the oem Toyota ones and I haven’t had any issues in 2 years (knock on wood)
