Just got my first 4runner. Running loud so I took it in, guy says the exhaust checks out but its been straight piped. Will an aftermarket catalytic converter quiet this thing down? Or maybe its an issue I haven't considered?

If it's straight piped, it's meant to be loud. That means it's headers to a pipe without a muffler. If you want to quiet it down, you can get an exhaust silencer that bolts into the tip to quiet it down, or get a muffler welded into the pipe.

    Sorry for the miscomm.
It has a muffler, it does not have a catalytic converter. Its not crazy loud but I would like it quiet. Muffler guy says aftermarket cat. con." MIGHT" not quiet the thing. Any thoughts?
And thank you for your response.

Aftermarket cats tend to be sub-par quality OR meant to be a high flow cat. Which cat(s) is/are missing? All of them?

I think there was only one catalytic converter on there, now there is none.

Just bought it from a guy who said it had a knock sensor issue. Shop says the code is EGR valve, no knock sensor code.
Decided to wait on the EGR and changed the plugs and wires .Changed the oil and filter checked all the fluids and vacuum lines. One of the plugs had oil on the wire and terminal side of the plug. Runs better now but still loud and maybe missing a little power.

Okay, so the way I see it is if you want it to quiet down to stock, you need stock manifolds.
