Canvasback vs weathertech

I'm trying to decide on rear cargo protection. I don't know if I just want a weathertech cargo tray or the canvasback that includes rear seat protection.

How much does cargo slide around on the canvasback? I'm thinking the Weathertech might keep things put a little better.

We do plan to get a larger dog in the near future, but we also have kids, so the rear seats will almost always be up.

Any other input or factors I'm not considering?

 

I don't have a canvas back, I have a generic cover that I bought from Amazon. If I have the rear seats folded down, it will extend from the back of the front seats all the way back to the hatch. It's really handy, although it's kind of slippery. Stuff will slide around on it, as well as the dogs. When I have the back seats up, I just attach it to the rear seat headrest and just fold it in half.

I think ideally I would use the cover that I have, and pick up a rubber bed mat designed for a pickup truck, and cut it to fit. That would be a non skid surface for the dog and cargo, and also weigh the cover down so it doesn't slide around as much.

 

In a similar situation and I think we'll start with the Canvasback and add a cargo tray later if needed. I want to protect the carpet on the back of the seats when they are flat for hauling any wood/landscaping/building materials. It's amazing how many small pieces of wood and debris will embed themselves into the carpet under normal use, and it's a PITA to get that stuff out.

The ideal situation would be if Canvasback offered just the covers for the 2nd row seat backs at a lower cost, then you could add a rear cargo tray of choice separately. Absent of that, I'll try leaving the Canvasback down and put the cargo tray over it. If it ends up slipping too much on the canvasback, I can either modify the underside of the tray to increase grip or just remove that section of the Canvasback cover from the carpte. From what I've seen online, it looks like the Husky has better coverage than the Weathertech mat, but you have to cut the access for D-rings separately. I only have experience with Weathertech so can't comment on the quality of either the Canvasback or Husky products, but all 3 seem to be well reviewed.

 

Yeah, good point about the small wood pieces getting stuck in the carpet. I'm going with the canvasback, and if it's too slippery I'll put a weathertech mat or similar on top of it.

 

I got the Canvas back. Fits like a glove and will definitely protect against doggy nails, etc... I mainly wanted it for that, plus I load/unload tons of equipment - work stuff during the week and music equipment on weekends - and wanted to protect my carpet and seat backs from all that wear and tear. I HIGHLY recommend the Canvas Back stuff it's one of the highest quality things of it's type. Easy installation (took 10 mins), easily removable if you need to, cleans up very nicely.

Only draw back I see is that stuff will slide around easier on the Canvas Back material than it does on the carpet, but you'll get that with the rubber mat, as well.

 

Try this stuff. I have it under rugs on my hardwood and it stops any movement at all. No residue (doesn't actually "adhere" to either side, just "grippy").

Another option: I have a couple of those blue-colored blankets that movers use. They are super handy for many needs. Although probably not the best for construction materials, they are great for hauling more delicate items shoulder firearms, musical instruments, etc. Doubles as a great ground cloth for camping.

 

yes.. and those blankets are good backups if you ever get stuck somewhere in the cold!

When I purchased my 2022 I purchased the weather tech mats for the front back and cargo area, couldn’t be happier. Bought weather tech for every vehicle I have ever owned.

 

i picked up the canvasback with side protection, back hatch protection and the extra 20" flap for bumper protection when loading and unloading... my 4runner came with the factory toyota cargo area mat and do plan on using hte factory tray along with teh canvasback liner when hauling animals, anything muddy etc... but for normal daily use i will just use the canvas back...

i ended up getting the snow camo color since i was sure that black (same as my interior) would show all the animal hairs etc.. im impressed with teh quality, but i think almost $500 for all the pieces was a little much... but its custom made to order and made in america, so i guess you pay a premium.

 

For those of you that mention the canvas back has issues with sliding - are you saying the cover itself is slick and anything placed on it will slide around?

Or is it that the cover itself slides around? I was looking at buying the canvas back, but wanted to know if it's secured to the cargo area in any way. Or is it more like a blanket/rug just laid down in the back. I hope my question made sense, thanks

 

I have the canvasback. It does have a slippery surface.

Don’t forget about Ruff Rugs. They’re popular with people here as well.

 

Stuff with a slippery bottom will slide around. Mine is under my platform so its not an issue.

 

I’m going to throw this pic. in the hat just in case. This does not cover the sides, but it does not let stuff slide around, and my boy Cosmo gets excellent traction on, and off road. It is a truck bed mat cut to fit. I kept the cut off piece so that I could pull it down for bumper protection, works great for my needs.

 

Does he not know there is a hump there? All us 4R owners that built platforms are sissies.

If anyone tracking this thread is looking for a Weathertech, I have a NIB unit that I'll let go for a cheap price. I ended up buying the Weathertech before deciding on Canvasback and never installed the WT tray. Worth noting is the box is oversize and the shipping cost is pretty bananas so local pickup (Southern California) is a better option but I'd rather see it get used than have it idle in my garage. I have a weather Tec with the the optional bumper flip out. Stuff will still slide on it.

I put in two Uhaul furniture moving pads and stuff does not slide unless you really take a corner fast. I find it more quiet also for all my stuff. I have a trailer Jack, lug nut wrench, spare trailer hub, tool box etc always back there and it stays in place.

If you fold one in half it covers the area with Rear seats up.
