Figured I’d post this in case anyone is looking for better sound. I bought the factory jbl sub enclosure and trimmed the bottom part of it with a dremmel to fit the JL 8w3. Giving it about 300 watts and this thing hits so hard and clean it’s incredible.

I’ve also added sound deadening on all four doors, the hatch, the floor while I had the seats out as well as the rear quarter panel behind the sub enclosure.

I have a non jbl system and 3rd row so I’m not sure if this will work with others but all factory mounting points were already there.

I did the same thing a year or so ago! Did you add any Poly Fil to the box?

None for me. I just sealed mine up. I’m surprised more people haven’t done this mod. People think I’ve got a 10 or 12.

I’m also running the factory deck. Used an audio control LCQ-1 for my line out and it has a ton of tuning options

Sub amp is under the drivers seat and the 4 channel is under the passenger seat as well as the line out so if I ever need to adjust it, it’s right there.

Ah ok, I have the Fil but I’m thinking I like the sound without it better. I’m using the factory head unit too. I’m running 2 Kicker Key amps. 200.4 for doors and 500.1 for the sub. Both under front passenger seat.

No the 8w3 fits perfect. You will need to dremmel out part of the box where the magnet sits though to make sure you have enough clearance

No diameter fits perfect. It’s the depth. On the factory box there is plastic that is part of the design that is raised up and won’t allow the sub to fit depth wise so you need to sand those down on the inside of the factory box housing.

It’s super simple. Took less than 5 minutes to do.

    I see. Thanks for clarifying.

I'm considering the JL or the Audison Prima 8" to replace the factory sub using the factory box.

I would also very much like to see what it looks like when you've put the side paneling back on.... based on our DM's, I'm guessing the 2020 jbl side panel w/the 'grill' for the woofer is different than what you had... I'm hoping I won't have to make any changes to the side paneling

I used the 86150-35080. All holes were pre drilled on the 4Runner so it was a very simple install. You’ll need to ask a Toyota dealer what bolts you’ll need. I don’t remember the part numbers

No third row. I left it all open, just put a grille over the sub to protect it. There’s a shallow pocket where the factory amp is supposed to go an I have my dogs towel and soft items tucked in there. I’ll put a pic up shortly

Awsome fit. I just ordered it. Did the JBL subwoofer come with the enclosure ? Toyota dealers can't tell me. If yes, what model no. was printed on the subwoofer and what impedance was it ? Tks.

How did you install the sub amp? Can it just be added In line? I heard the JBL system makes that quite difficult to do…

Just received the factory sub enclosure. Part number 86150-35080, can confirm this fits in a 2016 with no 3rd row. Uses 4x M6 bolts I will post pictures when I get it installed.jbl sub 4runner.jpg

Any updated pics ? I’m about to do this, curious how it looks without the jbl rear panel. I might just order it and be one and done with it.

Yeah I love it. I used some speaker fabric I found in Amazon for like $12 and used double stick tape to hold it. The plastic piece you remove from your 4 runner trim panel is held on with screws so if you ever wanted to go back to sick you easily could. If I could do it again I would of tried hot glue to attach the speaker fabric since the tape hasn't worked that great. If you look at the lower right there's plastic that divided the top and bottom storage compartments. In the middle of that plastic is a nub that should be cut off. I didn't notice it until after I installed so it sticks out a little. I also bought the grill for the sub to protect it...if hadn't that piece of plastic probably would of gone right through the sub. Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out and it sounds amazing. I use all the space I have in the back there all the time so it was important to me to not take up any space for a sub.

Going through this process myself. It's taken longer than I would like but that's b/c I'm going full replacement route and I'm kind of OCD when it comes to some of this. I'll post a full build thread when I'm done but here's a pic:

    Stock, for now
Picked up a hitchhiker along the way...following these builds. I have an Infinity Kappa 10" lying around that I want to try to fit into this spot, but no one makes an enclosure for it. Doesn't look like there is enough material in the box to extend it out to a 10".
