2003 4Runner rear axle seal leaking

So after a bit of driving I could smell gear oil around the rear driver's side tire. Took it to a shop for verification and sure enough axle seal is leaking. The shop offered to replace the seal and rear axle bearing for $1100. I told them to button it up and I'll pick it up.

Stopped by Toyota today picked up a new rear axle seal and o-ring for $12. I have the caliper removed, rear disc rotor off and emergency drum brakes removed. tomorrow I will drain the gear oil and remove the axle and if all goes well install the new seal and re-assemble the rear end.

If I wasn't pressed for time I wanted to do a write up with pics but kids, two new puppies and busy wife I really just want to get this done.

If anyone has questions feel free to ask, I will answer with everything I have learned. (BTW I purchased the factory manuals for reference and torque specs).

 

Believe it or not the worst thing was re-assembling the brakes. Overall not a bad job.

 

So I got the same problem on the same tire...did you go ahead and replace both when you did the work? Also can this be done in a day?

 

no, I just did the leaking side. Yes, I took my time and was done in about 5 hours and that is with cleaning and inspecting everything.
